God i hate working retail.
God i hate working retail.
So i was at work today at H-E-B, (for those of you who dont know what that is, its baisically a smaller version of Wal-mart) and im cashiering minding my own buisness trying to get customers out as fast as i can because we had a rush of people come through. This guy comes throught my line, about 55-60 years old. I scan his items and what not, and the total bill was like 24$ and something cents, and he pays with 100$ bill. So im handing the guy his change (it was like 76$ and yada yada cents) i count it out loud while putting it into his hand. He counts it again after i count it out loud, and says the following "i wish they'd teach you effin kids how to effin count, you dumbass". My mouth litterally dropped. So i count it again, and apparently i short changed him a penny. A freaking penny. Who in the hell gets that irate after getting short changed a penny? So i open my register drawer, and hand him a penny. After i do he goes off on this rant, cussing and what not, and while he's about halfway throught it i interrupt and say "are you done being a jackass yet"? After that he just took his groceries and left. If i wasent in dire need of money, i swear i would have punched him. I cant even begin to explain just how pissed off i was, needless to say that jerk ruined my entire day. Any of you guys work retail as well? Simmilar experiences anybody?

Oh how I LOVE retail. I work at a shoe store in an Outlet center...
I think the worst situation I had was when my boss told a guy to bring a shoe back and we would see IF we could take it back, it depended on whether or not we carried it. Well, we didn't. He got really, really pissed off and started going on about how I don't know what I'm doing and that "this is fscking bullsh!t" and that I was wasting his time yadda yadda. I asked him to stop wasting MY time and to come back another day and talk to my boss. He never did.
Oh, and the Loss Prevention stuff is hilarious. When you catch people and they get pissed. It's awesome. We had a couple of women come in, who are repeat offenders. Well, I knew immediately to follow them, considering they had HUGE purses that were empty. My DSM and I followed them around, chit chatting about merchandising and whatnot. At the end it was said to my DM: "Why are you telling her (me) to follow us? You don't even work here, some old man does, and that shoe your carrying isn't even up here. You're racist" etc. Someone was guilty, no?
Never had anyone get mad over a penny tho... I get told to hold on to it, if anything.
Annnnywho. I'm done for now.

I worked at Target during the '06 Xmas season and dam the hours were fuckin hecktic. The store i worked at was in the richie people area. (i kno trget and richie dnt really go together but theyre cheap asses) Anyway basically they were all spoiled ass mother fuckers that looked down on everyone. I got called a spick by some older white dude. I told him i didnt appreciate him talking down on me like that. He went off so i called the manager over. Picture a 6' 5" almost 300 pound bald headed, gangster looking guy. he intimidates the shit outta me and im cool with him. He started talkin to the customer tryin to diffuse the situation and it only escalated. i left my register to talk to the guy. but he kept runnig his mouth me and the manager knew we wer both going to do something that would get us fired so we called one of the HRs there. All in all i never got an apology i never got to fight but the guy was escorted outta the store and somehow banned from going back there. That was the craziest shit that happened

I actually "enjoyed" retail/working with the public. I love when people get all pissy, I remain completely calm and usually toss in one or two smartass comments here and there. Remaining calm and not getting worked up just enrages the person even more. It's hilarious to me the things people get worked up over.

Does working in a convenience store count? I worked nights alone in a C-store in Florida when I was 19. One of my many chores before closing at 12 a.m. was to sweep the parking lot. I was just about finished sweeping late one night when a customer came in for a microwave sandwich. He took the sandwich out to his car and then emptied his ashtray and tossed the empty condiment packets out of the passenger window. By that time, I had a large dustpan full of gravel, dust, litter, etc. from the parking lot. I walked over to his car, picket up his litter, added it to my dustpan and then emptied the contents on his passenger seat. Needless to say, he was not amused.

I don't work in retail nor do I ever want to... I already have to deal with the general public more than I care to. I see patients that come into the hospital to have surgery. I only talk with them for a few mintues and for the most part people are polite and friendly but I'd say I'll have to talk to at least one person every day or two that has a stick up their ass with an attitude. I've had people bitch me out for sending bills for their surgery when they have no insurance asking "How do you think I'm going to pay for this?" when it's like they expect it to be free and we're stealing their money. I've had people complain that if their bill was $2,000 and after insurance paid they owed $25, they think they shouldn't have to owe anything and go on a rant about that saying it's stupid or expecting us to give them a discount on it so they only owe say $12 instead. I'll also get people that get pissed off just by asking them to come into my office to talk to them about their insurance. I'm not holding them up b/c if I wasn't talking to them they'd just be waiting for 10mintues for their blood to be drawn. However they'll throw a fit about me having to talk to them and then when they get in here I don't ask them for any money and the only physical thing I need from them is their insurance card and they'll throw a fit over just having to pull a card out of their wallet. In talking with the lab we've had a patient that when they had their lab work done (blood drawn) they told the nurse that "It was the best stick they had ever gotten!" and was really polite... as soon as they got into the waiting room she said so all the other patients could hear her that "She almost killed me! It hurt going in and hurt coming back out!" and also mentioned to one other nurse that her family doesn't talk to her... wonder why. I've also had people feel the need to show me their scars, hernias, colostomy bags, ect... I also get to talk to people that look and smell like they haven't showered in weeks. There's also the people that are homeless and/or just plain lazy on disability, collecting SSI, on medicaid, but come in here with a wad of cash in their wallet and dressed in nice clothes and look fine. Either that or they won't have insurance so I'll talk to them about financial assistance and ask them if they're working which they'll say no. So I tell them we need some income verification and thats when they say "Oh, my wife is on disability, thats all we live on..." I've caught people in lies giving us wrong billing and contact information. The list goes on and on and on... people in general are stupid.
I hate dealing with the public but it's kind of funny sometimes though.

I worked in Modells for like a year and it absolutely sucked. The managers think they're tough because they're bossing around 16/17 year old kids and the customers think you're their slave while you work. People would always steal stuff which makes me laugh because its so pointless to steal. I used to work the register and people would just get so irrate when they couldn't combine coupons or if their points card couldn't be found on our system.
The best though is when people come up and say the price is something different and they "found" it somewhere in the store saying it was like 50% off or like 20 bucks off. Don'tcha think that if we are having a sale it'd come up on sale? Majority of the time if its on sale we know way before YOU do. lol

Oh, he pitched a fit and threatened to call my manager so I gave him my manager's phone number. Manager backed me up but told me to never do something like that again. I'm a manager at BBY.. I specifically became the Inventory/Merch/LP/Media Manager because I hate the general public and their bullshit. The Customer is wrong 90% of the time and I have no problem telling them. I don't let them walk over me like most managers in retail do. I don't explode or act like a jackass, I just use common sense. You want a discount? Ok.. lets go to the computer and see if any of our competitors offer it for cheaper.
I would literally take complaints about the color of the sign on the building. Or parents who would leave their kids at the rockband display and leave the store, and when they come back they wonder where their kids are and why we weren't watching them.
The General public has no idea how stupid they act when they go into a retail store.
I cannot wait until I can move to corporate and get out of the stores.

Yep. I told one lady that nowhere in my job description does it say Baby Sitter, and how does she know that the people that work here aren't child molesters or keep chopped up kids in the freezer.

I worked at Circuit City, Dell Inc (field tech), Stop & Shop and an repaired arcade games. I moved into IT during college and I have met some of the dumbest students in my life. From demanding I change a mouse or keyboard when nothings wrong to "what happened to my files I saved it on the desktop.....". The latter is my favorite because no matter how many times you tell them that a script deletes all files on the Desktop, My Documents and the local user settings but not those created by the Administrator account. I've had people threaten me saying it's my fault they forgot to save their work. My boss called me in whenever a student or teacher is irate. I became Team Leader due to that. Now I work for Hewlett Packard as a Software Design Engineer making 63k. No more customers or stupid people. I must say I won't do retail ever again.
Sorry for the long post.

currently I work at a casino/hotel/spa as a front desk clerk. My job is too check everyone in. Last Fridat night this guy walks up, and starts in on me.
Guy - "I need my room, now. My wife is fighting with me and I can't go home."
Me - "Sure thing sir, I just need to see a picture ID and a form of payment."
Guy - "I gave you my credit card when I made the damn reservation. You have the damn thing on file?"
Me - "Yes sir I do, but I have to see it in person upon check in. It is considered your electronic signature and is protection for both you and me from the law."
Guy - "Well I don't have the damn thing! Just check me in."
Me - "Well Mr. (forgot his last name) I do have your number on file, but it is hotel policy to have a payment in hand upon checkin."
Guy - "Then what the hell is the point of me giving you a f**kin card over the phone when I make a reservation?!"
Me - "To gaurantee that you have a room available when you arrive. We do not do anything with the card, just hold it on file. We have to have some sort of payment - cash, credit, check, travellers cheques..."
Guy, interupting - "I am going to get my room one way or another. Am I going to have to get irrate and make a scene? Or are we going to do this pleasant?"
Me, finally made up my mind NOT to help him - "Sir, you can do whatever you feel necessary. I can not check you or anyone else in without some sort of payment IN HAND upon checkin."
At this point, a couple walks up behind him to wait to be checked in. They see he is mad, and talking loudly and abusively. They listen intently.
Guy - "Well then, what do we do now? You cancel my room?"
Me - "Only if you have no payment to give to me at this time, yes."
Guy - "And then what, you attempt to charge my card?"
Me - "It is the hotel's policy that if a guest who made a gauranteed reservation does not show up, the card is charged. If the guest cancels after the 24 hour window, we charge for the room."
Guy - "F**k you, you ain't charging my damn card. I will be damned if you do that."
Me - "Sir, it is not up to me to decide whether or not this happens, it is automatic, and I have no control of it."
Now... point be known. That is a lie. I can do whatever the hell I want. I could have just canceled his room, not charged the card and sold the room to someone else for full price. But the guy lost it and began treating me like so -
Guy - "You know what, this isn't going to happen, you are going to give me this room, and you are going to do it without my card because you have the number there. You will also not charge my card because my wife who kicked me out of the house has all the credit cards. Now, are you going to make my night worse for me, or are you going to give me what I f**king want?!"
Me - "Sir, the best I can do for you is hold the room while you figure out a form of payment and then come back, otherwise, I cancel the room and the card is automatically charged."
Guy, turns to walk away - "Well then Andrew, why don't you just go f**k yourself..."
Me - "Thank you sir, have a great night!"
He then walks away, and I cancel his room.
I helped the other guests and they laughed and clapped. The entire time I just smiled, looke dhim in the eyes, and kept myself calm. It felt great. I will NOT let someone at my work try to demean me like I am some pissant who can be pushed around and let peopl try to get what they want when I can not accomidate them because of laws and rules in place. Truth is, I could have just got my manager, had him handle the guy and we could have worked something out for him, but I decided after he cursed at me and became rude to not help him. I even told my manager the story and she was glad! We then sat in the back and cackled manically while we charged him $199 +tax for a room hge never got to enjoy. Honestly all he will have to do is dispute it with his credit card and they will take his side, and we will refund the money with no problems. But I do not care, he was a jerk.

LP is great. I was LP at Mervyn's for a while. I liked to think of it as hunting people. Cant spend as much time on one person, or get away with the things you can in LP once you make the jump. I love being law enforcement, but LP definatly had its perks. Citizen arrests FTW.crimson_heart_2003 wrote:Oh how I LOVE retail. I work at a shoe store in an Outlet center...

He got really, really pissed off and started going on about how I don't know what I'm doing and that "this is fscking bullsh!t" and that I was wasting his time yadda yadda. I asked him to stop wasting MY time and to come back another day and talk to my boss. He never did.
