Why a honda?!

Post by excon » Tue Aug 26, 2008 9:29 pm

I have yet to rant in the off topic section...

My girlfriend drives a 1993 Honda Civic. She's got the 1.6L SOHC vtec engine with the same amount of power as a stock neon (but that's not the point). Her car looks TERRIBLE. By terrible i mean rusted, peeling paint, curb rash, etc. She's got 150,000 miles on it though....

Last night someone broke into her car and stole her ipod from the glove compartment. She has an aftermarket head unit with the instructions on how to remove it sitting in the glove compartment.

...the head unit was not removed. Her window was not broken. I think she was very lucky no one stole it (since hondas are the most stolen vehicles). But the question I want to know is, "why?!" this is a car on the street that looks horrible compared to everything else around it! The day before, there was a Subaru WRX STI on the street and i got drool on it as i walked by. Do people think that rich people drive hondas? what is it about hondas that attract everyone besides reliability and duribility? VTEC is not a miracle people!

/end rant

i think it's more the fact they people think that maybe since it look beat up. That it will probably be unlocked. And maybe think hm, maybe i'll just see what i can find. Score! free ipod! let's go!. Let's face it. Teens steal alot of shit.

sucks. but i don't think they picked it out on purpose probably. Just shit luck.

They know that kids drive them, and what do kids have... electronics. And what are electronics: easy to sell.

^ Wow thats an epic failure. Lots of them are stolen and stripped around here. Teggies too. I have to agree with Frank though, kids have stuff these people want.

Hondas are the #1 broken into/stolen vehicle pretty much everywhere.

known fact.

they picked on it cause it was easy. Subarus are NOT easy. And most of the time something that expensive... has an alarm.

Soooooo they picked the easy one.

I never leave anything valuable inside my car. Specially in plain sight.

People that do that kind of stuff will get theirs in one way or another.

At my last apartment complex, someone broke into my neighbor's Focus and stole the airbags. My '02 SXT was parked right next to the Focus but it wasn't touched, thank God. I had the Mopar airbag lock installed the next week. [off-topic]

They were not interested in stealing the car itself but rather anything they considered of value inside.

Given your description I doubt anyone would have run off with the car with the exception of kids looking for a joyride... any joyride.

I've had my cottage broken into a couple of times so I know the feeling. They break an $80 piece of glass to get in the place to steal a ~$6.00 6-pack of beer.

there was a time 4 or so years ago that the neon was the most stolen car. made my mom all nervous that hers was going to be gone one day.

to teens, it doesn't matter what the car is. it just depends on how easy it is to get in too. older cars take no effort to break into, and it's low-risk. there's a slim chance a rusted out POS has an alarm on it, and chances are the owner thinks no one will rummage through it meaning something MAY be in the glove box, under the seat, in the center console, ect ect.

I leave my ipod in my car everyday. then again, my ipod is in none of those locations. it's hidden and zip tied somewhere in the car.

you don't want your shit stolen, you put it in a less obvious place. not in a common spot like a glovebox.

specially ones that are bright colours. Thats actually a theft deterrent. Now they might still break into it... but they'd hafta be a colour blind idiot to steal a bright orange... red etc. car.

Another good deterrent is tint. Not really dark/illegal, cause then they just wonder what's in there. Tint makes windows harder to break.

When I hide my stuff, I slide the passenger seat foward a little bit and put it under the front of the seat. When my friends SRT got broken into, I had my camera, phone, wallet, car keys, and ipod (we went hiking, didn't wanna bring anything) all under the slid-foward passenger seat, and nothing got stolen. My other friend, who had her camera and purse under the seat, but in the back, got everything taken.

My friend had his jetta broken into and they stole his cowboy hat, his change cup, ate the old white castle sitting in the back seat and drank half of a new gatorade that was in the front seat...

I guess if they can use it they will take it...

About the neon thing...if someone stole either of my cars they wouldn't get far because there are not many of them around. They would have to strip it locally if they wanted anything.

how dark was the tint and what brand? lol some tint that you can get acts like safety glass and pretty much just makes it bend (like a broken windshield).

also depends on if your window has a frame around it or not.
never said it wouldnt break though... just makes it a bit more difficult.

mcar was broken into a while ago but they went through the door lock instead of the window. they got away with 5 bucks in change, an ipod adaptor to play it through the radio and the most expensive item of all... dunkin donuts napkins.
