Good old days? When I was pumping gas for a living back in '78, regular was around .78. I can't remember if this was for leaded or unleaded.

anyone here think the gas company's or the speculators feel the slightest bit guilty that they contributed to the economic downturn? (i know there are other factors to the economy, but damn if this didn't play a key role).

My dad had an interesting theory on this...

Gas kept going up and up and up. At the cost of fuel was at its pinnacle it because economically feasable to explore alternative forms of fuel, electric, hydrogen, etc, etc. However, the gas plummetted and now the cost to develop the alternatives is greater than plain ol fuel.

Interesting way to look at it, and it makes sense to me.

I started driving back in '79 and I can remember paying that same amount. It was for my '68 VW Bug and that was for leaded. :D

It is very interesting, however, now we know what kind of monopolistic power that fuel has over our economy and as such I doubt we will stop exploring alternatives vigorously.
