For the hardcore Internet explorer users..
I actually use both. Both IE and Firefox have pluses and minuses. As for security, I've always used IE as I've never had any issues at all. As far as the article you're referring to, it only states the issue is with gaming passwords. Shocking I'm not a gamer!
I've trusted and will continue to trust Microsoft IE. Thank you for the heads up as it's always a good thing to be informed.

I never understood how people say macs are so hard to get used to. Is everyone really that dumb.
And I can see where you can get confused on final cut pro but that doesn't make it bad software. Learn it. And you'll see why most major production companies use that over anyother.
And gaming. Really. That's the big problem. Fucking gaming. Give me a break
I have used both. I'm pretty software handy in both systems. I will not part with mac. I have sold friends on mac and they will not go back.
Mac as an os. Is amazing. And now that they are using intel chips you can build a hackentosh. So there you go

The dual OS setup allows PC games to be run on a Mac too.

Why would I want to run OSx on a PC? I'd run Windows, an operating system at is worlds easier to use, has better support, and has games other than chess. And if I want to upgrade the hard drive or video card I don't have to by a new computer.racer12306 wrote:Can you run OSx on a PC?

I've already said, I hate Dells too. They make their own parts, so if your power supply dies or something else dies you can't go to Best Buy and get a new one, you have to order it from Dell. Every time someone tells me they have a computer problem, the first thing I ask them is, "What kind of computer do you have?" if they say, "Dell" or "Mac", I say, "There's your problem". HP FTMFW!

i've already addressed this with you and you are 100% wrong. i absolutely guarantee that you are wrong. but since ive already told you that you are wrong and gave you the info to prove it, i doubt youll believe me now either.GreeNeons03 wrote:I hate Dells too. did you even try going to Best Buy to get a power supply for the dell? guarantee you they would sell you one.. they might say it will only work with dells or its more compatible with dell or something.. but thats their selling tactic.
just because the sticker on the power supply says dell it does not mean in any way that (for one that dell made it) it will only work with a dell computer or you need another one from dell to work
my buddy has a Dell Dimension 5100 or 5200 or something like that, older system... a few years... his power supply died.. what did I do? ordered a generic one from newegg for $15 to put in it. hey what do you know.. it worked. theres no magic dell power supply or magic dell parts.. the ONLY thing custom about Dells are typically the front of the case.. meaning in a lot of instances a normal floppy drive wont work in the case and thats why they charge $30 if you want a floppy drive built with your computer. other than that ALL hardware is compatible with a dell.
i dont know why theres so much brand hate. granted, most the time yes oem computers arent the greatest.. especially when you pay for the low end systems.. but what do you expect when for $300 you get an entire computer with an LCD.. yet that is still a profit for the company..
at the end of your post you are apparently touting HP as a better one than Dell.... why? they are an oem company too.. in your reasoning of things they make their own parts too (they all have HP stickers on them)... and they cost more and dont perform any better.. so why? not to mention a lot of HP laptops overheat and need to be repaired (motherboard with onboard video)... at extensive cost.. so they cant even produce a good product to begin with..
and how did we go from a browser war to which hardware is better? the two dont even relate.

You are absolutely right; OEM companies do make their own parts, such as cases and maybe a few internals, like an optical drive and most, if not all, is universal and can be replaced with a store bought unit. However Dell makes most of their own stuff, such as motherboards and power supplies.jT wrote:at the end of your post you are apparently touting HP as a better one than Dell.... why? they are an oem company too.. in your reasoning of things they make their own parts too (they all have HP stickers on them)... and they cost more and dont perform any better.. so why? not to mention a lot of HP laptops overheat and need to be repaired (motherboard with onboard video)... at extensive cost.. so they cant even produce a good product to begin with..GreeNeons03 wrote:I hate Dells too. And yes, I have tried swapping a Dell power supply from one bought at the store on my aunt’s computer and it didn't work. The Dell power supply has an extra connector that attaches to the motherboard, were as a normal computer only has one connector. My aunt ended up getting a new computer, (HP) and I pulled the hard drive from her Dell and transferred the files hooking it up as a slave to the new computer.
Also, I have an HP desktop and I've had two HP laptops and both have not had any major problems. My desktop is about 4 years old and it's still alive and kicking. I just did a memory and hard drive upgrade on it not long ago and now it runs better than ever.
My first laptop I used till I couldn't use it anymore. I took it everywhere and used it for everything. That laptop's almost 10 years old. It still works but is horribly slow, and the battery won't hold a charge anymore.
My current laptop is a gem. I love it. The only issue I've had with it was a faulty fan, which HP swiftly repaired. Unlike Dell which would have made me jump through 100 hoops to diagnose the problem when I already know what's wrong. I recently did an upgrade on memory on my laptop too, though it was only replacing one of 512MB sticks with a 1GB stick to give me 1.5GB of memory, it did make a bit of a difference. I’m waiting for Best Buy to have the memory that my laptop uses on sale again to get another gig.
All in all, Dells (like Macs) are the worst computers to own. Personally, I have never had any problem with an HP that I couldn’t fix myself, other than the fan issue with my laptop. I would recommend an HP over a Dell or Mac to anyone.

I've had no problems sourcing parts for Dells, other than ink, and I believe you can get that at retail stores now. But the only "part" ive ever replaced in 6 years of owning Dells is upgrading the memory/CD drive to DVD burner.
I think most PC manufactures have gotten away from proprietary parts, due to losing sales. Gateway used to be the worst. You couldn't even upgrade memory. I have to admit I have a HP all-in-one due to Dell's ink policy, but I liked the scan quality better on the Dell/Lexmark unit. But the HP ink is much cheaper. If i had more room I would run the Dell to scan and the HP to print.

*yawn* Alright, I guess I'll make my post of the month.
GreenNeon... How ignorant are you? Honestly? If you want to make a reasonable argument, then use both OS's for more than five minutes. Actually tear a mac apart and learn how they work. Just going "HAR HAR HAR PC IZ BETTER THAN UR MAC TARD!!!" doesn't really help your cause what-so-ever.
I've been working on macs/pcs's since I was 11 years old. I now have 10, almost 11 years of computer experience under my belt. My home computer was ALWAYS a PC, either made by Packard, HP, Dell, or finally home built. At school, since I was in kindergarden, we used macs. Allll the way back to Mac OS 7. Needless to say, I've grown up around both.
Now, having a kid mess with computers, NOT a good idea. Our home computer had so many problems because of me fiddling with it. After we finally got internet in our house, I damn well near blew the thing up with viruses. After I grew up, learned a bit more, I was FINALLY able to fix the damn Packard around the age of 15, when we had a HP. All those years in school, I never broke a single one. I even went into terminal and messed with things I shouldn't have... still never borked it as badly as my home computer.
Fast word to High School. Mac OS 8. I started to take every single freaking computer class there was. Typing, graphics, video editing, the works. I learned more and more about the system. Mac OS 9 came out, even more improvements! Woo Hoo! Eventually 10 was released, and I'll admit, I hated it. I hated every single thing about it... until I continued to do my work and find out why it was so good.
As I was playing with the various systems, at home I was doing the same. We had Windows 95, 98, ME, and finally XP. Holy god were their viruses up the ass on all systems... But, I was young, stupid, and looking at lots of porn.
Anyways, the more years that went by, the more I played with PageMaker, Photoshop 7, Adobe Premiere. I grew up around all of these editing software. To say the least, they're not easy to use. You have to learn them. I eventually became a network admin at school, and now am a macintosh specialist here at work.
Just a brief history to let you know, I've had my experience, and played with systems. Linux was somewhere in there too, but not for long. Too much terminal work for me.
You say the "OS is too hard to learn".... do you have the education of a 3rd grader? Macs are MENT to be simple. Yea, going from a Windows to Mac OS might be a bit difficult, but if you don't think hard about it, it's easy as hell to use. No need for drivers, lots of crap on your desktop, nothing. Final Cut Pro to hard for you? Well no shit! Final Cut is professional level video editing... like the shit Disney, Lionsgate, Universal uses. There's a learning curve. Just like photoshop, you have to have YEARS of experience to use it, or have someone hold your hand for awhile.
Can't upgrade the harddrive? Do you know nothing? I've had 5 different types of apple laptops, a mac mini, imac, Mac Pro, Powermacs, eMac, cubes, you name it. They've ALL received ram, harddrive, and in some cases, video card upgrades. (Yes, SOME macs you can actually upgrade! HOLY SHIT!!)
Are they easy to tear apart? Hell no! There's a LOT to be said for their design though. Show me a PC that looks as good and takes up as little space as an imac. What, can't do it? Didn't think so.
No Mac gamers???? I'm just so happen to be a mac gamer. Things installed on my machine or have been:
-World of Warcraft
-Quake 4
-Spore
-Sims
-Bauders Gate
-Diablo 2
-Civilization
There have been a lot more.... Can't name them right now though.
Hell, I also have Windows Vista on my iMac as well for games!
-Half Life
-Left 4 Dead
-Devil May Cry 4
-Mass Effect
-Grid
-Crysis (At HIGH settings, 25 FPS biatch)
and the list goes on and on! And all of these games are on, holy shit, a MAC!!
Hell, and I couldn't use Windows XP because I have a machine with 4gbs of ram and 64-bit capable. I had to use VISTA!! OMGVISTA!!!
Only reason there aren't more games on my mac side is because of the lack of support. That's far from Apples fault. At least companies like Blizzard arn't fucking stupid and go cross-platform.
Ever try and trouble shoot a windows machine? Fucking thing takes hours to figure out whats going on! I laugh at the IT staff daily because they have a TON more help desk tickets than I do to go through! And we have 14 Macs here at work.
Every do it for a Mac when something goes wrong? Shit, pop in the install disk, boot from that, repair, DONE! That's it! That's the most I've EVER had to do in my 11 years of playing with macs.
Macs are useful in every way. Games, Graphics, Business (albeit, you may have to use VMware to run windows at well, but it's still perfectly acceptable in a windows server environment) daily life, you name it, a mac works just fine.
Yes, they can get viruses. They ARE more secure by default though, and when people finally start writing malicious code for them, I'm sure they'll have problems as well. But for the 20+ years they've been in business, that issue hasn't arised yet.
So, before you say PC is better than a Mac. Go play with both. Learn how to use them. Don't just be fucking ignorant and stand your ground when you have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Everyone HATES vista, because guess what? All their friends hate it. I gave it a try myself, and it's not ALL THAT BAD, AFTER YOU PLAY ADJUST IT.
I, for one, will never own a PC. I'd rather pay the extra cost, have better support (they don't outsource their customer service) have a better looking machine, and have the CHOICE of running any operating system I damn well choose. I don't have to jump through hoops to get Windows on my Mac in case I -need- it. Unlike the OSx86 community. At least apple supports both operating systems in some way, shape or form. The same can't be said for Microsoft.
Final conclusion.
-Mac OS > PC OS for over-all use and support
-PC Hardware > Mac Hardware for cost
Wall of text crits you for 10k!!

There is a Mac that sits on a desk less than 5 feet behind me. I have used it many times and I don't understand the damn operating system. Therefore, I try to avoid using it like the plague. I have given Macs a shot many times.Opi wrote:You say the "OS is too hard to learn".... do you have the education of a 3rd grader? Macs are MENT to be simple. I took a TV class in HS and all we had were Macs to edit on. I couldn't get it down and I took that class for two years!
I'm starting a broadcasting class next semester that all they use to edit is Macs. Needless to say, that is the only portion of the class I am not looking forward to.
The only Mac's that I can think of that you can upgrade are the ones like the one I am sometimes forced against my will to work on. The big silver tower that weighs a damn ton and is the only Mac I can think of that actually has a screen separated from the rest of the computer.Opi wrote:Can't upgrade the hard drive? Are they easy to tear apart? Hell no! There's a LOT to be said for their design though. Show me a PC that looks as good and takes up as little space as an imac. What, can't do it? Didn't think so.

This is what I don't get. Why blow a ton of money on a Mac when you’re just going to load Windows on it to play certain games or do certain things? Might as well just get the PC and save the rest of your money for more games and shit.Opi wrote:Hell, I also have Windows Vista on my iMac as well for games!
-Half Life
-Left 4 Dead
-Devil May Cry 4
-Mass Effect
-Grid
-Crysis (At HIGH settings, 25 FPS biatch)
Yes I have, several times.Opi wrote:Ever try and trouble shoot a windows machine?
Doesn't take me hours to figure it out. Sometimes it's actually pretty simple to diagnose.Opi wrote:Fucking thing takes hours to figure out whats going on!
Could that be because there are more PC's in your office rather than Macs? I know we only have I think 4 Macs where I work. Everything else is HP PCs.Opi wrote:I laugh at the IT staff daily because they have a TON more help desk tickets than I do to go through! And we have 14 Macs here at work.
I can not make an argument for or against Vista because I haven't used it more that the demo PC's at Best Buy.Opi wrote:Everyone HATES vista, because guess what? All their friends hate it. I gave it a try myself, and it's not ALL THAT BAD, AFTER YOU PLAY ADJUST IT.
Good for you. Enjoy your lesser Machine. I, however, will never own a Mac and will continually enjoy my PC.Opi wrote:I, for one, will never own a PC.
I've rarely had to call some customer support for help, but I figure if I ever do and they can't help me, that's what Geek Squad is for.Opi wrote:...The same can't be said for Microsoft.

^^ You had me right up until the end. The Geek Squad?? Are you kidding me? That's the biggest joke ever. A bunch of know-nothing high schoolers working on my computer? No thanks. My ex gf took her laptop to them because it was under warranty and they diagnosed the problem and said a critical drive was missing and it would cost $250 to fix it.. She told me this, I laughed and we went and picked up it and guess what? I fixed it for free by downloading a missing driver. What a crime. Also, they left their shitty diagnostic cd in the computer that they had it boot with. That was pretty worthless so I just threw it away.

-I'm very amazed that you know how to put together a PC if you can't even use a Mac operating system.
-Hopefully you can actually learn something in your broadcasting class. Stop being so close-minded about everything and give it a try. Then I'll accept your argument
-Mac Pros are fully upgradeable, that's what you're referring to. We have have 14 of those at work
-Every single made in the past 15 years can have it's harddrive and ram upgraded at the very least. Yes, some of the cases are hard to take apart. That's why you google for instructions.
-Almost all of the old and new towers can receive video card upgrades
-Current line of Macs have the Mac Pro and MacMini that need an external screen. There's ton more before this generations line. You obviously don't know much about this company
-That does not look nearly as good as this:

or this:

And I can almost promise you, that hp doesn't live up to the imac i posted in terms of specs.
-Only thing I use my windows side for is games. That's it. And I sure as hell didn't pay for it.
Nor did I pay for the games, or software.
-Windows trouble shooting takes a lot longer. Ask any IT specialist. This is a VERY broad subject though.
-Yes, that is part of the reason. We have 60 or so Windows machines. (Some custom built, some HP, dell, compaq... you name it, we have it) And only 14 macs. There are some windows machines that give constant problems though. The macs only seem to have server related issues.
-So you can't make an argument for vista because you've barely tried it out, but you'll make an argument for Mac OS..... that you've barely tried out.... interesting
-Stop being a jackass and saying "lesser machine"
Internally it uses PC parts, just like every single other computer in the word. If you WANT to have such a biased opinion, use "lesser operating system". And be specific. Do you hate OS 7, OS 9, Maybe OS 10.2? Or OS 10.5?
Oh... don't know the difference? Then why are you arguing. I at least know the difference between Linux Redhat, Windows 98, Windows ME, OS 10.4. Some operating systems are more stable than others.
-That last statement had nothing to do with customer service. It had to do with them not supporting other OS's. Apple makes the stretch to help support the Windows and Linux OS... Microsoft doesn't give a shit about anyone else but themselves.
-Seriously.... Geek squad.... you use them for support? There is no hope for you my friend... No hope.
Try again.

wow man. seriously. get off the Dell witch hunt. they do not make their own hardware!!
oh your aunties computer did not work blah blah it had another connector... oh yeah, you mean that 4 pin CPU connector that is practically a standard now!??! yeah no shit you need a special power supply for that because power supplies that do not have that connection, well, they dont have it!!! not too hard to understand that there are different types of power supplies, but when you buy the CORRECT one it will work.... it's not Dell's fault that you dont know what you are buying....
I've got a Dell Optiplex 745 sitting here, so what you are saying is I CAN NOT open this up and change anything because I need to buy a special magic Dell version? YOU ARE NUTS.
And as far as Gateway, occasional demons, I don't know.. I had a Gateway Pentium 2 450Mhz that cost me $3000 and I could change every piece of hardware in it.....
Even my first Packard Bell 486SX/DX 25Mhz with 2MB of RAM I could eventually change out all the hardware..

See, now that design I can respect. I don't personally feel it's as good as the imac (looks cheap, and I don't like the side ports) but that's opinion. Seems like it takes up about the same footprint and amount of wires.
+1 for Dante for having a valid PC argument.

I agree. I wouldn't use it myself (well, maybe as a back-up occasional use machine) but if I were arguing the point of a PC looking as good as a Mac (out of the box) and I was a fan of HP as GreeNeons03 seems to be, I would have picked that one.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I love the Mac OS, it is clean, easy to use, and overall a better product than anything Microsoft has produced. Aethetically, Apple products are top-notch too; Brilliance in simplicity. Mac FTMFW there.
However, I had the choice to buy a PC or a Macbook; ~1000 dollar laptop price range. I chose to get a PC mostly in part because to get the same specs (Ram, Processor, Hard disk space, graphics card, ect.) in a mac, I would easily have to spend $2,500. Vista 64-bit honestly isn't a horrible operating system(still not up to par with Mac operating systems), but it does have a few things that need to be worked on.
Macs can just be a little overpriced, IMO.
Just my $.02

One thing I really like about OSx is the icon interface
So I installed Rocket Dock on my PC. Now I have a icon-free desktop and nifty (hidden) animated icons that magnify and bounce when I select them!

Macs arn't cheap. You're paying the "apple tax" which is essentially their OS and design.
My iMac cost me $1,800. It has 1 wire. Takes a minimal footprint on my desk. Nothing is on the floor. Currently has Linux, Windows Vista, and Mac OS 10.5.6 on it. It runs every single game I throw at it at the highest setting (except for Crysis) with AT LEAST 30 FPS in an given moment. I've already upgrade the ram and hard drive. All my friends are jealous of it
It's essentially the last computer I'll need to buy for at least 5 years.
I don't understand all the OS hate. Just because you don't understand doesn't mean it's any lesser of a system compared to the next. I run all 3 main OS's because each are better at a certain thing. No OS does it all. Period.
And don't be mad at a company because you can't afford the product. It's not their fault you're too damn poor. Are you mad at porsche because you can't buy a 911turbo?
