So, my job laid me off about 2 weeks ago. I've been trying to slowly ride my last couple of pay checks until I find another job. I was really looking forward to my federal refund which should be around $1000 until I found out that the lady in the accounting office where I worked never set it up for state tax to be taken out!

She already did this to me last year which luckily only cost me a little bit because I wasn't a Vermont resident half way through the year; but this year it's not looking so good. She doesn't even have an accounting background! My boss had to have her take online courses in accounting because she was screwing up all kinds of stuff! She even did horrible on a basic math and accounting test to TAKE the online courses!

I still have to fill out my state refund form but I'm guessing it's going to be PRETTY high this year. I'm pissed. All that money was going to go towards paying my dad off finally and maybe buying my car a nice set of wheels.

If I ever see her on the street I am going to...well you get the point. ARG!!

She saw an opportunity to moving into bookkeeping and get some training for it and she jumped at the opportunity.

I would be blaming the boss because in situations like this they should have a degreed accountant on retainer to at least give the books a once over and provide advice on an ongoing basis.

So, you never noticed on your stubs that your state taxes weren't being taken out.... you never caught the error and reported it to HR.

You should blame yourself for not noticing that for an entire year, and like Paul said, blame the boss for incompetent hiring.

The accountant screwed my state tax return 4 days ago. She got me owing more money when in reality, she didn't add all of the state taxes withheld from my W-2's. I had to add it all up myself and she said I was right.

I want a refund.

Not to detract from your story but... I worked for CiCi's Pizza for one day a few years ago (trying to come up with the car payment but quit after seeing how dirty the place was ) and they screwed up my W-2 by saying that I worked more hours than I did. I ended up having to file an amended return. What a pain. I even shaved my beard off to work there and it ended up being just one day!

We sold our house to our son last year, and when they announced that there would be a $7500 first-time homebuyer tax credit we were all happy that he'd have extra money to fix our (oops -- his) aging deck. Then when we're doing his taxes we discover that it doesn't apply to buying a house from a "close relative". I was like WTF!

Yeah, I think those were my exact words.

AGREED...... What kind of a STOOOOPID boss would hire an UNQUALIFIED person.... for an ACCOUNTING position ??!!

I am sorry but I look at every stub I get, my check is direct deposited but I have to look at everyone, people make mistakes.
