What was the deciding factor?

If all Neon/SRT-4 shells are the same, what was the deciding factor for if one was to become a Neon or an SRT-4? And if it was Neon, what decided if it was going to be SE, or SXT, etc. This was just something that popped in my mind yesterday when I was driving so I thought I'd ask.

Well they had to make Trim levels for all types of people. SRT-4's were for the racing enthusiasts. SXT's were probably for ones who didn't want the speed, but a decent car (with power options), and SE's were the budget cars... plastic door handles, side moldings, third brake light don't work (it's always on the SE's I see this lol), no power anything, etc.
Just my input.

I thought the ES was the base model? My SE has painted door handles and moldings, power everything (even heated mirrors

), A/C, cruise control, and I believe my third brake light still works.

They figured out how many SRT's they wanted to build in a year, and that many became SRT's

That's what I meant lol. Got the two mixed up.

The SE is the base model, the ES is comparable to the SXT.

The SRT shell has some minor differences. A few nutserts/weldnuts to mount the intercooler. Prolly some other minor items.
Basically the same for the crossmember. There is a nutsert in it that the SXT doesn't have. For a few hundred $ more replacement cost..
But nothing that can't be overcome to make one work for the other, obviously. I don't think there any strength or lightening features between the two. Not like the differences between a Lancer and an EVO.

I was thinking more like, did they pint at one shell and say, "That will be an SRT by tomorrow", and another shell and say, "That will be an SXT." Not the demographic each one was after.

Well see: When daddy Viper and Mommy Caravan got married they decided to have a bunch of Neons.
Daddy Viper of course wanted all strong, awesome SRT-4 Neons, while Mommy Caravan wanted nice, cute, and affordable Neons.
They both knew they could not support too many of one type so instead they decided to just do a straight split down the middle. Half SRT's and half Neons.
In the end however, as most marriages go, mommy Caravan got her way and had mostly regular Neons.
During the process though, some of the regular Neons went through horrible metamorphic changes that changed certain parts they had (A/C, power windows). This in turn split the regular Neons into different classes like SE, ES, SXT.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Neon SRT-4's were to be a limited edition from the get-go but Daimler had to up production due to demand. Profitable for DCX for two reasons:
a) the large number of shared parts with the Neon;
b) the considerable increase in MSRP.
