I still owe on mine but the payments are dirt cheap and so is the interest rate so I haven't been in a hurry to pay it off...plus I took an extra 1500 loan out against the neon to work done on the wifes van.

Well, yea... I'm the dumbass. Did you know that the military doesn't make a lot of money? We get paid jack shit for all the crap we go through, and all the hours we work.

I didn't have an NCO to guide me into car-buying. No leadership in my shop when I checked into Camp Lejeune 3 years, so when I found out that "Hey, you got approved for this amount, at this interest rate" my first thought was "I got approved? Well lets go pick a car!" ya know? My whole family moved to Okinawa, and I didn't have anyone left here in NC. Or in the states for that matter.

So yea, I'm an idiot. Whatever. I made a stupid mistake, and I'm painfully recovering from it. I can't continue to beat myself up everyday about how "Wow... I've paid $11k on my car so far, and for what is left that I owe... Neons aren't even WORTH that much nowadays.... wtf...".

Anyway, I'm done. Thanks.

It's okay man... most of us guys who join early do the same thing.

<--- did the same thing with an older car :P

And uh... I think I might drive this SRT-4 until it dies... or it makes me go broke? .. :P

At least you are upside down on a car that will last. Much better than being upside down on a car you have to sink money into just to keep running.

I don't think there is a single person who has bought a car under the age of 25 that didn't pay at least twice to three times the actual value of the car. I bought my ford focus at 29.3% intrerest on $8500 for like 8 years...so yeah do the math someone..think it came out to a total of almost 30 000 dollars when I had it all payed off. and the car was almost 3 years old when i bought it. And I too was in the military at the time.

I did real good on my first 2 cars. 77 olds omega and a 79 buick regal both bought in cash. The Buick was by far my greatest buy! I got it for 750 and drove the piss out of it and then sold it to a friend cause he needed a car real bad and then the fool abandoned it when it broke down...or that is what he told me.

Actually the Buick was my 2nd best buy. Best buy was a 99 Grand Am. Bought it for 4800 in 2004. Along comes Hurricane Katrina and does a bunch of cosmetic damage so I get a 1600 check from the insurance company. 2 weeks later some joker plows into me and totals my car...they give me 6000 for it...so I got 7600 for a car that I bought a year earlier for 4800! Then I bought the NEON.

I have also made some piss poor car buying decisions like a 93 Grand Am (4 cyl) that was my first car with payments...I got took. Funny thing is they tried to get me to buy this new car that was stripped down to nothing...a NEON sport or something....didn't even have a radio. Also got burned on an 81 VW rabbit Pickup that threw a rod about 3 weeks after I bought it. Then had an 83 GTI engine swapped in and that was fun when it was running.

Live an learn.

Have you checked into refinancing? Or just take some of that deployment money and pay that bitch off...it will save you a lot down the road!

Jerome Adams - All the interest has been paid on the car, so far. I can't refinance with my actual bank because I'm too much of a liability since I will be getting out of the Marine Corps soon and I can't guarantee them that I have a job. What it boils down to, from what I've concluded by talking to friends, my girlfriend, and some of her friends, is that it's better to just do the payments than pay it off because it'll be the same amount in the end at this point. I have a mediocre credit score, so might as well tack on to the already 3 years of no missed payments.

Well, I don't feel SO stupid, but I do wish from time to time that I had waited. Perhaps then, I would've been able to turbo by now  oh well...

Why you getting out? The military isn't a bad place to be right now. Job security is worth more than you think! As long as you haven't got into any major trouble you will keep putting on rank and if you are smart with your money, it isn't too hard to be pretty comfortable in the military. Does you job offer a reenlistment bonus?

I am USAF and I got out after my first 4 years. Was out for 17 months and was laid off twice in that time frame and this was over 10 years ago when the economy was good and jobs were everywhere.

Do you have a degree yet? If you dont have a degree or pretty close to it and a solid job waiting for you, DO NOT get out! Re-up and work on your degree and pay off as many bills as possible.

The grass is not as green as you think on the other side! I dont care what your buddies tell you. I see it all the time. Unless you have something rock solid waiting for you, you need to stay in.

Also, doesn't your branch of the military have a credit union? They should have better rates than a bank would.

Ya man, I hear it all the time. I'm not trying to dog on you, because I know. I should stay in. But only if I wasn't about to be married. The Marine Corps isn't family-oriented. As much as they talk about it, it's not. I don't want to deploy anymore, I don't want to deal with formations, I don't want to have to get my vehicle inspected whenever I want to go home, I don't want to have to wait for a holiday before I can even go home, I don't want to live in a little cubicle 3-man room anymore, I don't want to have to wake up at 430am every day during the week so we can go run down the street, do some pushups, run some more, do some pullups, run some more, stop so people can throw up, run some more, then decide to run back and have 30 minutes to shower, shave, eat chow, and brush my teeth. I could go on, man. I look at my W-2 and I made $16,000 or something one year. Last year I think I made $20,000. I have been a military dependent my whole life, before I joined. My dad served 22 years in the AF and retired as a Major. I went to school for a year only to find out that I wasn't approved of any financial aid because they saw my dad, being retired as a Major, being able to provide some support. Which he didn't. So I joined for the school money. And that's strictly what I'm standing by. Two combat deployments, both to Afghanistan, and I'm done. Nearly died the second time around.

Like I said, not trying to dog you bro, but some people want to stay in, some people have ABSOLUTELY no choice but to stay in, and some just could take the military and shove it up their Commanding Officer's ass. Just saying. lol...

And if I really wanted to re-enlist, it would've been a couple months ago while I was still in Afghanistan so that all my bonus money would be tax free. Speaking of bonus money, for my MOS we only get $15,000 for re-enlistment bonus. That's not even enough to make me consider it. $45,000? Maaayyybee. But I wouldn't bet on it. I'm just fed up with the Marine Corps, the military life, going overseas to fight some war that we have no idea what we're doing, et cetera.

Alright... I'm done. Let's not talk about why I should stay in, or what everyone's interest rate was when they got a car at 18. Start a new thread, and I'll jump in on it.

k, thanks :)

The scenario of paying too much isn't confined to just young Military personnel. Car dealerships train their sales force to victimize the customers, They get paid commissions
based on gross margins, and "finance add-ons". The assholes in Congress did nothing to protect consumers from car dealerships, in the recent financial reform legislation.

Okay here is my dilemma. I know all you bastards are going to say keep the neon...cuz this is the keep the neon til it dies (or til I die) thread.

I have an 03 SXT with 96K on the odo. Mods actually installed: vibrant dual exhaust, OBX LTH, Magnaflow Highflow cat, AEM CAI, MPX 60mm TB, MPX UDP, Optima Battery, Hurst STS, Boogers, Prothane "street" MM, Prothane Master bushing set, BC coilovers, 15x7 rota slipstreams wrapped in relatively new BFG supersport A/S

Mods sitting in the garage waiting for more parts, money, and or time: Mag intake with butterflies and MSD digital window switch (should be next thing installed), self P&P mag head, comp 400 cam, AEM cam gear, head gasket set, timing belt, ARP head studs, rear disc swap.

I still owe 2500 on the car.

Option 2: There is a 2005 WRX with 47K on the odo. I have yet to see the car but I know it is blue (could care less) and a manual (that is important!). I also know it is a salvage title. Airbags were deployed when it wrecked back in late 05 but carfax said no frame damage. The car has been rebuilt and was on the road for awhile and just got traded in. The dealership is putting a new clutch in and a few other things and it should be ready to look at tomorrow.

They listed it for $13K but said they would go 10K when I talked to them on the phone. I have already pre-approved on the car with my bank for 10K (had to get special clearance due to the salvage title). Insurance company said no problem insuring it, but I wont get the same as a clean title car if it is wrecked. I found somebody who said roughly 60% of clean title value.

So if I trade in the Neon, my monthly payments would go from 150 to about 250 which is no big deal. Insurance would actually drop a few pennies with the WRX over the SXT (go figure). Gas would go up cause WRX drinks premium and more of it than the neon. But I would have a 160 hp (wheel) AWD 3100lb rally car. Or I can keep the neon which is currently sitting at 127 wheel hp and about 2600lbs with a shitty open dif :cussing: .

Both cars still would need more modification to be where I want them to be.

Plan for WRX: new up pipe and turbo back exhaust along with Cobb AcessPort tuner ($2000), wheels and tires ($2000), coilovers and sway bars ($2000)...this would be the minimum acceptable level of tuning and it would be done in the order listed.

Plan for Neon: install intake. Install mag head/cam (still need to get the head decked and everything reassembled, also need water pump might need new valves/valve job) then I need to find help installing it. All that should hopefully bumb me to the 145-150hp at the wheels. Then I need sway bars set ($300) and new brakes ($400). Then it gets really expensive...quaife lsd ($1000+ install) and a new clutch ($350-500) and will need to get trans freshened up ($1000+).

Then I have to choose if I want to stay NA (megasquirt and maybe some 10.5 pistons) or if I want to go turbo ($3500 for ASP kit) and then another $1000 or so for miscellaneous gauges and sensors so my shit dont blow up...probably do a full bottom end rebuild at this time as well so add another $2K

another option would be to pay somebody to do a full srt swap. If I remember correctly there was somebody on the easy coast offering to do it over the course of a week or so for $5k. And that would include a trans with the quafie already installed.

So when it is done I could have a 200HP WRX for about $16K (not factoring the money I would get from selling the extra neon bits)

or several stages of neon from a 150hp for about 4K to a 220hp plus turbo set up for 10-12K but only the front wheels pullin it. I could get the NEON to a 1:10 hp/lbs for less than the WRX which would only be a 1:15 hp/lbs....

These are of course multi-year plans and assuming the cars dont die before they are done. I figure it would take me about 2 years for the WRX (mainly to save up the cash as everything should be pretty simple). The neon would probably take longer (especially a turbo build) due to the complexity and the time to save the $$$.

so whattya think? Easy but more expensive route with the WRX or keep chipping away at the neon?

I said in an earlier post, you've lost interest in the Neon

Go with the WRX, if you're sure that's what you want

2500 is not that much overall. I'd pay that shit off then start looking at other cars keeping the neon as your DD or project.

I thought of that too but we dont have room for 3 cars right now and the wife wont support 2 cars. She knows how easy I would go get the WRX if I didn't have to give up the neon to do it...

I will know more when I get to see/drive the WRX and then if it makes me all warm and tingly on the inside, sit down and talk numbers.
