This week is the end of the line for the Neon. (see link below)

Its been a nice long 11 model years. To honor our Neons lets all drive with our headlights on all day this Friday (09/23), and at midnight, we can all honk our horns at once.

WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? the engine specs on the caliber look great,.. but it is so ugly, I thought the SRT would boost sales giving neons a much longer production span,..

...damn...
...out of curiosity though, is this also going to make it difficult to get replacement parts and after market performance parts? - i hope this doesn't phase us out...

replacement, maybe but not for a few years.
Aftermarket, nope look at the Supra or 2nd Gen Eclispe aftermarkets, both are still going strong and are growing.

Stock mechanical replacement parts will be avaliable for years to come. You can still get stuff for the Omni, Aries, etc. Body parts will start to be harder to get. You'll be relying more on junkyards, but thats years away too. The aftermarket will still be there as long as demand is there.

well if you are worried about support going away, look at the 1gn's they have been out of production for 5 years and the aftermarket is as strong as ever

Damn, now parts are gonna' be more expensive. Oh well. good cars never die anyway. Maybe we will have a Danchuk catalog of our own someday where we can buy practicaly every part to build our cars from the ground up. (not likely but it sounds neat)

what about in other countries?....
Mexico still makes the old vw beetles. is it likely someone else will still make the neon?

by Ifixyawata
I think Mexico actually stopped making the old beetles in '03 or so, but that's still a helluva run for a car that basically stopped regular production in 1979.

yeah it ended in 03... actually the last year of the beetle it was an special edition and it costed almost as much as a neon... WTF!

Man, that article is a bunch of bull. The 1st and 2nd gen Neons were not a flop in my opinion. The SOHC engine put out more hp and tq than a lot of the "high output" engines it was competing with. At the time compact cars were getting by with 1.3L-1.8L. Even in 2000, when the Neon was redesigned it had the quickest 1/4 mile time amongst a C&D comparison.
Aside from the headgasket issue in the 95-97 cars, there haven't been any real glaring issues. And the recalls have been quite few... unlike the Focus.
If it was such a failure how were they able to build a million Neons in only 3.5yrs? The author probably drinks lattes rom Starbucks and carries a man-purse. The Neon shook up the small car market. Only to shake things up again with the introduction of the $20k SRT.

Yeah, but it didn't sell like the Civics, Corollas, and such. They are also talking about the general commuter, grocery getting public. Not car enthusiasts. Car enthusiasts are a VERY small part of the whole picture.
