I am kind of in the mood to rant and sort of get older and not understand the youth these days.

I am talking about Emos. Is there anybody that can explain this to me? I was just surfing around youtube and found some guys (maybe girls, i couldnt really tell) showing how they do their hair and look all emo. I guess I can understand the fashion, whatever, fashion comes and goes but what is with the attitude? I see these kids around town and they look like they went through a life of being raped by daddy but act like a 3 year old, which would really serve as a childish clinging to what daddy did in younger years.

Furthermore, the emo music is simply horrible. It is all about knives and bleeding and crying and guys starting their periods.

Do emo boys grow facial hair or are they missing the man gene? Do emo boys have man parts? I really don't know!

What is going to happen to these "individuals" (individual termed loosely as they all look the same) when they get older and realize they are pretty messed up?

I am not really that old, im only 24, but I just dont get kids nowdays. I can only imagine what the next "in" thing is going to be. Rocky horror picture show dress ups.... everyday?

I hope this image of the future (ironically the past) doesnt scare you!

When you start referring to the generation after yours as "these kids" and you just can't understand them or their music, you have definitely started becoming an adult (it was called the "Generation Gap" when I was in grade school). Can't happen to you? Yeah, I thought the same thing when I was in my 20's but it's inevitable.

Been there, done that several times now... regarding not understanding the generation coming up.

You REALLY know you have moved on when you suddenly realize you don't like the "new" music and find the music you do like being referred to as the oldies. Actually... there is some of the new music that I do like... have to admit that.

The older generation went through the same thing with me and my piers when we were in our youth... and so on it goes.

I never understood my generation and still don't let alone the generations behind me. I was supposed to be born at a different time LOL. But this emo craze is really disturbing. But since we're on the subject of disturbing youthful activities I'm going to go a step further.

Eye makeup? Tight pants? Capris? Long flowy hair? Manicures? No facial/chest/arm hair because they shave/wax it? WTF?! When did men stop becoming men!? And since when did being depressed/sadistic/emo become cool?

Emo is NOTHING like you see it everyday when you go to the mall and see the little tweens dressed up like retards. It has become a scene that was completely destroyed by the media. MTV, etc. They gave the "emo" scene a completely different image that had everybody jump on and say "oo me next!" which has now come to the point where everybody looks like a fucking moron.

Nobody actually want's to kill themself. It's the same idea with those gothic retards you see, they only do it for the attention and the image. The more you stare, the more they get off on it.

When the word emo comes up on this forum, usually my name comes up. But everyone know's it as a joke, because I am actually not "emo." Only by appearance. Yup, my hair is long and goes to one side, and yes, I wear fitted jeans. Am I emo? Fuck no. I love metal, hardcore, post rock, death metal. You won't find one "emo" band on my iTunes.

I'm just gonna put emphasis on the point that the emo scene, when it began, was nothing like it is the way you see it now, the media completely destroyed it with the help of 13 year old teenage girls.

I def can understand the fashion thing. I certainly was not trying to offend anybody, especially anybody on here Shit, I used to dye my hair blue for christ sakes, I can understand "fashion."

I have a younger sister and she has a lot of these "emo" or "scene" if you want to call it that kind of friends. Those kids are all so weird, almost like goth as you stated glasswars, but in a strange kind of "i hate my life and want to die" instead of a "i hate my life and am already dead" like goths lol. Striking similarity, huh!

I would honestly be interested in hearing an explenation regarding the emo thing. I don't like to dislike something unless I understand because it is ignorance otherwise! So, do tell glasswars, if you have the time or would like to.

I have no idea but I'm right there with you on a lot of things. It's a little unrelated but I remember when I was in high school we acted like idiots but to us it was funny. After being out for about a year I got off work early one day and decided to just stop in and see one of my teachers. I had gotten there a little before the day was over, kids still in class so I stood at the back and watched. It had only been a year and I realized how stupid we were just a year ago, sitting in those very chairs acting the way we did.

I'm still young, a lot to still learn but now that I'm on the outside looking in, seeing how kids act, pretty much the same way we acted and thinking our $8/hr McJobs was all you needed to make it through life... only took a year out of HS to realize how wrong and stupid we all were. Whats worse is I remember getting told that we were stupid and thought the person telling us was an idiot... I now realize they were telling the truth lol.

I agree with glasswars here, the whole 'emo' scene has been construed beyond belief over the years. I swear every tween girl that I see nowadays has the whole 'tight pants, flats, button-up shirt, short hair' look going on.

I grew up as a skateboarder, so I was kinda always sporting a style that wasn't the norm. Remember the Jnco jeans, baggy shirts, and bowl hair cut days? I sure as hell do, because I was rocking the shit out of it!

You will notice that a lot of the fashion that eventually becomes the norm starts in the skateboarding and music culture. Hell, I have been rocking the 'tighter' pants for years now. All because I once saw a professional skater rockin' a pair. I don't rock the ridiculously tight jeans, though. Those are just uncomfortable. Haha.

Some might consider my style 'emo', but I don't. I usually wear tighter pants (my nickname to many people is actually 'Chickpants'), smaller shirts, hoodies, a variety of different types of shoes (from Pony's to my purple Air Force Ones), hair is usually shaved closer to my head, rock a beard, I have black thick rim glasses, and I have stretched ears. I personally think my style falls more into the realm of the current metal scene, but meh...whatever floats your boat.

Oh and just for you LSP, I have an old pair of jeans that I cut off a few years back to create my invention...'manpris'. They're pretty sweet. Sure I have a few people that give me shit about them, but I like 'em. Maybe I'll even bring them to Carlisle!

I've been rocking the same blue jeans and metal/hardcore band t-shirts since I was in high school. They were baggy then....but the same size pants aren't baggy now, and the shirt size has stepped up to having 2 x's though.

Im still in highschool and dont understand it at all. Sure we all get depressed or sad but why make an entire life style based solely on bein that way. The fashion I dont understand, the music, (I LOVE metal BTW) I dont quite get and the general purpose I have no clue. All the girls around here are that way and love to smoke dope so Im just gonna stay single. We have a few "guys" run around like that but we either A) BEAT THEIR ASS or B) Try and run em over. I understand what you're talking about, but I think the whiny little bitches you're referring to (the ones that look like their dad butt raped them) are 'scene' kids that just dress stereotypically 'emo' and act like their shit doesn't stink and they have the hardest life in the world. Also note that most of them are 14 years old. They're whiny and brooding like all other 14 year olds. They just stand out because they catch your eye due to the fact that you already hate the way they look.

I think most true 'emo' kids don't even really play into the whole scene look really. At leas in my opinion it's easy to tell who are the more, let's say, indie cultured folks and those that are just whiny little scene kids pissed off that their parents won't let them go to the My Chemical Bromance concert alone yet.

Everyone has people they hate. I don't just hate scenesters, I reallllyyyy loathe wiggers as well. So if this offends you (not the OP, the wiggers), I'm glad. Maybe you will think before you look and or act stupid in the future. Imitating another culture isn't cool, it just makes you look dumb...

In sum, yeah a lot of people suck and I have nothing against 'emo' kids... It's the scenesters I hate. Take your sister's (purple ) jeans back to the drawer you found them in.

I went though that "gotta wear ALL black" goth phase, to the destroy shit and riot punk phase, to the, I'm a normal guy with shit in my face phase I'm in now.

Really, the whole "emo" trend thing is just media hype. Remember when avril lavigne came out and everyone was suddenly a "punk rocker"? It was all because media hyped it into the new "cool" thing to do. Well, this is generally the same thing... just bitchier.

I know a ton of people that have that tight jeans, parted hair look (me being one) but no one I know is suicidal and acts like daddy raped them. I (we) enjoy all the metal, hardcore, bash people in the face music that people have grown to love.

Don't look to much into it. It's just a trend and will fade away in another year. By the looks of it, the 80's are coming back... and god help us all....

I wear board shorts and surf t-shirts and listen to British inspired Rock. I did the same when I lived in the Suburbs and now that I live on the Beach.

I don't understand following trends. Just be who you are.

I have told a few of the scene kids at my work, who wouldn't get off the Rock Band Demo, that their little sister called and they wanted their jeans back.

the so called emo kids, that the media puts out there is more then what it realy is.
the reason why i say that.
im a raver, but the media makes the rave scene look like a bunch of acid drugies who do acid all day and dance.
no..... its not like that, media changes the way a culture or group is seen under the eyes of the public.
i go to raves and yea u see some of those kids tripping balls, but its very few. But they stand out so much that media is all over it.

actually what most people think is "emo" music isnt "emo" music. (sorry if this has been stated already) but emo music isnt typically the hard guitar riffs and loud drums and screaming. its more or less the words i think atleast. go on youtube and type in taking back sunday. you may not think they are emo but look up some lyrics to their songs. emo as shit.

myself i listen to alot of death metal and alot of types of rock and if you look up some lyrics to thier songs, sure they may talk about killing, and other random shit but so does rap music lol so its really all in what your opinion and definition of any type of music is.

and i agree with sidepipe on the wigger thing even though i wont deny that i was on in middle school. Then i realized that i was wearing shirts and pants that were big enough to fit two or more people in lol.

so i stopped all that and became what i call the average style. you know comfortable baggy pants with breathing room and khaki shorts t shirts from hollister and skater shoes skater shirts and pants and shit. sports team shirts and band shirts lol i also wear a good bit of the nice button up shirts that you can get from american eagle hollister and places like that. i wear some affliction stuff and occasionally you will see me wear a flat bill hat but will only wear hats of teams i like. i hate when people buy jerseys of players on teams they dont like. dont ask me why its just a thing lol and on top of all that i have a tattoo on my back with a skull and wings and roses. i dont place myself in any type of "style" or "trend" but i also dont fallow what other people wear. its all about how i feel when i wake up lol

Rave scene in DC was insane back in the day. I usually stood out from everyone else. I have always had my own sense of style through the years. I call it lazy.Levis Jeans and Affliction t shirts, whatever. I have had people tell me I dress like a biker. I give some of the weirdos some credit, the colors and the money in some off these outfits is crazy! Can someone explain the to big for my head hats with the stickers on them? I just dont understand it and the couple people that I have asked get kind of offended. The girl pants look rediculous and the 1980 Nike hi tops where ugly back then. Some of these guys look like the Easter bunny threw up on them with all the pastel colors. I didnt know that looking gay is cool, i guess that is why I will never be cool!

Exactly. You're talking about scene kids. "Emo" is just the media's term for the modern trend in younger rock music (tight clothes, silly hair, makeup, piercings, attitude etc). It is 100% fashion now, but there used to be a lifestyle associated with it. Hardcore always involved emotion, but with aggressive music and lyrics. Then one day a few hybrid bands decided it would be cool to have both singing AND screaming in the same song. After that, the lyrics and themes started to change, which is essentially when the hardcore influence dropped off. I've been into hardcore/metal for a long time, and I even went through something of a 'scene' stage back in my band days. For me it was a fashion thing; more of a 'product of my environment' thing, really. My friends did it, the bands we looked up to did it, and back then, it was cool. It wasn't mainstream and hip, it was unique.

All this is exactly like the car scene. Trends come and go, some are cool, some are shit. Some might say rice is comparable to emo. It started off good, but the mainstream took it too far and ruined it. Modeling a street car after a racecar was a great idea to begin with, but it got watered down and before long it was the opposite of cool.
