For those of you with a laptop, how long does it take for your computer to boot?

From total shut down I started my stopwatch when I hit the power button and let the computer go until Trillian had fully loaded (it's a bit longer than it should be, but it's a good way of getting accurate times)

My boot time on my Gateway MT 3705 with 2 GB of RAM and a dual core processor running Windows XP took 2 minutes 5 seconds.

With Vista (what the computer came with) that time is up over 3 minutes!!!

4gb Ram, 2.20GHz AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Processor, 64 bit Windows Vista.

Takes about a minute to boot up.

I also have it optimized and all unnecessary programs removed.

Aside from Trillian and antivirus on startup, nothing else is set to load up, and it's STILL that long. My computer sucks, haha.

On my old laptop that I never use anymore b/c it's so slow... Windows 2000, 400Mhz Celeron, 128megs of PC133... about 20min give or take 5min haha.

My Asus Eee701 netbook does it it under a minute into WinXP.

You need to get that laptop optimized.

There are likely a lot of programs starting up at boot time that are totally unnecessary.

Right click over the system tray and click on "Task Manager" then click on the "Processes" tab... what is the number reported at the bottom left-hand corner?

lol or download xp performance edition. uses about 75mb of ram total for the os and runs on my 9 year old dell laptop w/a P3 like a dream.

takes about a minute or so.

Upgrade... yes upgrade to Linux.

ha...I dunno about Linux unless he is used to computers. Sometimes I have to work to get it to run certain programs but other than that good idea.

I dunno what my desktop does about 1:30 or so...

I decided to try out Ubuntu and it cut the time down to roughly 1:30ish without Trillian... so roughly 1:45 if I had Trillian.

However, I cannot figure this shit out, I'm very used to windows, and cannot get my wireless driver to work!

Figured it out, I'm now running Ubuntu with a boot time of roughly 1:30 when I booted earlier. Now that everything is up to date and I have wireless internet access, it's time for another boot to see what kind of time we have.

Well, Ubuntu is a bit of a PITA, but it was booting consistently at 1:30.

I also needed/wanted more hdd space so I picked up a 250 GB 5400 RPM Western Digital Scorpio and installed Kubuntu on it. Boot time now is right about a minute even, but it doesn't always boot properly so I need to figure that out.

It looks very similar to Windows XP/Vista, very very nice!

That's nothing.... quit complaining.

On my Old desktop, it was taking up to 6 MINUTES to boot !!
I finally got rid of it, last summer.

I'm complaining because my computer that isn't 2 years old yet and was "built for Vista" takes over 2 minutes to boot into Vista. That is not kosher.

I'm back on Vista with the new HDD now, to see how much of my nice boot times on Linux are because of the upgraded speed.


Speaking of Linux... has anybody figured out a way of using iTunes on it?

on my laptop it takes about 8 seconds when i push the power button to get to the encrypted hard drive password screen....... then after i enter the password it takes about 45 seconds to get to the desktop, then another 15 seconds or so until its loaded and ready to go....... so yeah about a minute to get up and running..

average system takes between 45 seconds and 1:15 seconds to fully boot if not you need to remove processes starting and or upgrade hardware

40 secs from i push the bottom till the vista completely booted.

i think there's a difference between dual core and a single one. but if with a dual core about 2 mins, there must be something wrong... either you have too many programs startup or something not good... or the HD data transferring setup is no good...

a lot of factors goes into Boot Up time. I've found out that high end memory will always help out.

My computer took 66 seconds from power button to desktop. This includes messing up my password once.

Done and it's a laptop so there isn't much I can do on upgrades. I do not have SATA so drives are limited although the RPMs do make a difference. And I am fully maxed out on RAM with good stuff..

when was the last time (or has it ever) it was formatted and XP reloaded?

no matter how well you take care of the system, start up programs, services, defragged hard drive, etc, eventually its just clogged up and needs to be formatted and a given a fresh start. your boot time would improve vastly, and the system would run better also.

I bought it with Vista 2 years ago and have occasionally messed with the OS. I loaded XP a while ago and couldn't find wireless drivers so I went with Vista Black, then Windows 7 Beta, then back to Vista, then back to XP when I finally found the drivers I wanted.

So yeah, it's been formatted fairly recently to go to XP only a month or two ago really. Then a fresh format with windows updates for the Vista test, fresh format for both Linux tests, etc... Trust me, I DO know what I'm doing with computers, lol.

Hmmm... my load time is about 30 secs. running vista on a Toshiba Satellite 205 which is about a year old. Though, I do not run a shit load of extensions and my virus scanner is pretty cool and not system draining (ESET NOD32).
