I show my appreciation by verbally thanking the flight crew on the way out for a safe and comfortable flight.

I have a love/hate relationship with flying.

I love the sights, sounds and general experience... but hate the possibility of something happening that will down the plane.

Guess I will have to start providing applause for...

-cashiers at the checkout counter
-taxi drivers
-hotel maids
-waiters
-mechanics
-bank tellers
-accountant
-lawyer
-landlord
-store clerk
-boss
-co-workers
-washroom attendant
-police (oh wait... uhm... yeah... fuck the police! hehe)

etc etc etc....

the time i start applauding is once i'm on a plane passing thru Japan and go directly to China (3 years ago), it meet some immediate weather change and something scared occurs (they call it wind shear). some of the passenger got injured because they didn't wear seat belt. my luggage falls off (like in the movie) and hit the one next to me... after landing in Shanghai PVG i'm glad that the plane was not crashed. that's why i applaud for those people that are friendly after the danger happens and those pilots who handle this danger right. this is the most horrified thing happen to me on the plane.

i should say be grateful to everyone, especially when your life is hanging in the air.

I don't like planes.. dont know why, just never liked them.

I don't see the need to clap.. maybe if the plane did a flip, went thru a ring of fire, dove into the water, and then landed.. then i might clap.. but other then that.. no clapping from me

For those who don't like flying, ask someone who was in Iraq in the early part of the war what a "combat landing" is. It'll make you never want to fly in a plane ever again.

wow...some interesting conversation.

Most pilot's (all pilots included) don't make crap for money. The ones that do are your senior pilots at all airlines and most pilots at the big airlines. Many regional pilots that are logging hours are making about 14-30k a year. They do it to log the hours and get a job at a larger airline since they will have the required flight hours. Some regional airlines are hiring pilots with as little as 200 hours when they should really have about 600-1000. To make good money as a pilot you need to be at the big airlines or be senior at the regional carriers. Captains will make the most as they are the ones usually doing the flying and they are ultimately in charge of your life.

As for the combat landings...they are rough. You should see what we do at flight school.

As for the clapping thing...some people might just be happy to be at their destination. I know when we landed in Vegas some people were really excited to be there....
