Out of curiousity... who's had jaw surgery?

Post by Diablo0 » Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:51 am

Tomorrow around lunch I go in for a consult appointment to have my jaw looked at. If you're wondering why... when I was 6-8 years old or somewhere around there I ran into a picnic table playing tag or some stupid game on the playground. I knocked some baby teeth out at the root and made my jaw grow slightly more on one side than the other. No we're not talking some freak deformaty here, just about 1/4 inch off when I bite down... and I have an underbite... oh and my family has bad genes when it comes to teath haha... I've got it made. I also think I broke something at the time and no one ever throght about xraying me or anything since I wasn't in pain... blah blah blah... anyway. This is supposed to fix all that so my bite is strait, my underbite is gone... i can talk and chew better haha..

So I hear it's a fun operation and wanna hear first hand from people that have had something similar done. It'll be about 3-4 months from now if insurance doesn't give me fits. When it happens aparently I'll be in the hospital for 2 days so they can watch me. My jaw will aparently be wired or rubberbanded shut so I can't move it for a week. I wont' be able to eat solids for a week so it'll be an all liquid diet like Ensure or whatever... which sadly I really dont' mind haha. My face will be swollen and bruised... YAY... bascially sounds like a fun time... can't wait and I do mean that really since I really want this fixed and to be done with it. Plus I love being put under and sorta like the pain. I'm weird like that haha

So yeah... anyone else had this done that can tell me what other exciting stuff I can look forward to? I've been waiting a year for this to finally take place.

I used to see an orthodontist who had crazy ideas about fixing my underbite, which still remains. Mine isn't all that bad, but it sucks when sometimes I can't bite things off 100%. Anyway, this orthodontist had me doing 15-minute daily exercises that basically involved me using a tongue depressor to push my teeth back into alignment. I guess if you don't mind prying at your own teeth until it hurts, it could work, but it never did for me. I quit seeing that dentist at my own will.

A few years later I went to another orthodontist who wants to do the same surgery you're about to have. I decided that I'll just try to live with my teeth the way they are. They aren't crooked or crowded and I can eat without chewing up the inside of my mouth, so I think I'm ok for now.

Sorry this reply was no help, but I do look forward to hearing about your experience with this scary surgery. Make sure to take Before, During and After pics.

Yeah they never told me about the tongue depresser thing but I guess mine is to bad to even think about it.

I can chew fine... I can't bite anything off since there might be 1 good place in my mouth except my molars where my teeth meet enough to cut through something. But I can chew fine, I guess since I taught myself how after dealing with it for this long.

The orthodontist took pics when I first started with him and recently. Most likely do the same when I'm all done and everything is fixed.

I dunno about during pics through... that would be kinda kewl though. It'd be like the Operation show on TV

Me too. I'm exactly the same way. I had to fight with a grilled ham & cheese sandwich today.

Yeah... I had an injection when I had mine removed... knocks you out like none other and you feel great when you wake up haha.

Well... went to the appointment I had. They knew I was coming... sat down for my 1-3hour wait. 2.5 hours in I get called to one of the rooms and I ask the guy if he is the doctor which he says he isn't and hasn't seen the doc for about a month. Long story short... I waited 2.5 hours, took a half day off work.. for what might you ask? Not a think... complete waste of time. Found out my insurance which they said they will take him, docs office says they don't accept my insurance so... I'm also back to square one haha

hmm if they are cutting your jaw or soemthin i think you are gonna be in some pain for a while. but im sure they will give you the awesome pain killers, and you can just pop a few of those and be happy all day long. lol i had surgery on my arm when i broke it in half and had to get plates to hold it together. all i wanted to do was roll on my side and go back to sleep after waking up from surgery, but couldnt because my arm was hurting real bad and my head was pounding like i had a hang over x 100000 from the 4 or 5 different drugs they put me on to knock me out. that was not fun, but before i fell asleep for surgery it was. lol and i had surgery on my knee when i tore the shit out of my cushion stuff between the joints. aftermath of surgery was not fun pretty much same as when i broke my arm, but later on was becasue i was able to sit around all day and do nothing since i couldnt walk. just get fat adn be happy on pain killers. my wisdome teeth were pulled. i hated that becasue my mouth woudl jsut be bleeding hardcore for no reason out of nowhere if i like made a wrong bite or somethin. not trying to fill your head with anything though, but surgery where they are doin crunk shit sucks. jsut becasue mostly oyu are in pain for a few days. then after the painful days are gone its not so bad i guess and you are just happy on those pain killers all day. haha....hopefully everything works out ok
