3gn Eclipse Clutch Replacement

Hey guys,

One of my friends asked me to help him replace his clutch on his 02 eclipse next weekend. I told him I'd help no problem. Now I have a good amount of experience with our sohc, so I think I'll find the 420a very similar to work on. But...I've never done any tranny work before [it'll be good knowledge for when I do mine eventually].

I've been sifting through dsm and eclipse forums, but I haven't really found a definite howto on it. Is it going to be close to the procedure for our cars? He's going to be ordering the parts soon, so I want to make sure he has what is needed, and that I have a basic procedure downpat.

Parts?
Gear oil 2qt?
Clutch
Throwout bearing
Any seals?

Procedure Am I forgetting something?
Jack it up
Take of wheels
Remove axles - not sure how
drain trans fluid
unbolt DS trans mount
unbolt trans
install clutch?

should be about 2 1/4 quarts of fluid.
axle seals
carb cleaner
thick grease to put on the part the throw out bearing slides and the release fork contact points.

Procedure:
Jack car up
take wheels off
have someone step on the brakes while you loosen the axle nuts.
pull the nuts all the way off, dis connect the knuckles
drain fluid
knock the axles out.
remove all parts in the way of the trans. remove all bolts except for 2-3 bolts holding the trans to the engine.
pull inspection late on the bottom of the trans
pull the bolts out connecting the flywheel to the flex plate if it is a modular setup.
place a jack under the oil pan of the engine.
remove trans mounts.
lower the engine down a bit
have someone or a jack under the trans.
pull trans off and lower to the ground.
replace clutch and throw out bearing.
may want to do axle seals while its out.

reverse procedure for install

hope i covered most of it.

That helps a ton. I'm a little iffy on the axles though. Once I remove the nut, do I need to take off the rotors and calipers to knock it out of the hub? I guess that ties back into disconnecting the knuckles. I imagine he has the two bolts up on the strut and then the ball joint. Will I need to completely disconnect those as well as the tie rod ends?

you dont have to take all the bolts off but its easier. knock the axle loose in the hub then un bolt it all and pull the knuckles off/out of the way.

Things went pretty well. Got everything off today, but the trans. The passenger side axle was completely seized to the hub and WOULD NOT COME OUT. It was pretty frustrating, but he's just going to get a new axle and a knuckle/hub from the junkyard.

Hopefully, next weekend we'll finish the job. End up breaking my 1/2" socket wrench and 3/8" breaker bar!

They make a 3/8th's breaker bar? 1/2" only sucka! Get to Harbor Freight and get yourself a nice big long breaker bar for like $20. Hell, even AutoZone sells a good size one for about that much. 1/2" for life.

^ the only problem with that is most of my sockets are 3/8 :-( I'll just pick up a craftsman next time. That one was a cobalt

Well, he finished reinstalling minor things this week, and it runs now. Thanks for the help. No wonder the clutch was slipping:
