Swiss court fines speeding millionaire $290,000
ST. GALLEN, Switzerland – A Swiss court has slapped a wealthy speeder with a chalet-sized fine — a full $290,000.
Judges at the cantonal court in St. Gallen, in eastern Switzerland, based the record-breaking fine on the speeder's estimated wealth of over $20 million.
A statement on the court's Web site says the driver — a repeat offender — drove up to 35 miles an hour (57 kilometers an hour) faster than the 50-mile-an-hour (80-kilometer-an-hour) limit.
Court clerk Heidi Baumann-Becker said Thursday the unidentified driver can appeal the decision, handed down in November, to the Swiss supreme court.
The Blick daily newspaper in Zurich reported the fine was more than twice the previous Swiss record of about $107,000.

I definitely don't think we should charge rich people more money just because they're rich, that's so wrong. The penalty is based on the action, not the person who committed the action. Rich people have earned the freedom to get tickets and brush them off because they have so much money. They earned that right. Also, think about the supercar sales that would plummet if all the rich people that bought them knew that if they got caught speeding they would have to pay a ticket that equalled the price of the car. And, if I owned a supercar and knew I was about to get pulled over and fined over a quarter of a million dollars, fuck the cops, I'm running - and I'm going to plow right into and kill your innocent family of four that passed this stupid fucking law.
Nope. It doesn't work, too many loopholes.

A fine in direct correlation to your net worth has FAIL written all over it.

This man has a worth of over 20 million dollars. If he earned the money to buy a Ferarri, and go speeding through a small town, than he can afford the laws that were put into place. Not only that, he is a repeat offender, meaning he has done this before.UriahRR wrote:I definitely don't think we should charge rich people more money just because they're rich, that's so wrong. Let's do some math:
290,000 divided by 20,000,000 comes to 0.0145. That means that this ticket is only 1.45% of what this man is worth. If the same scale went to someone making $50K a year, this ticket would be $725. This is a definately doable scale, although a hefty fine in general, but it would come with the territory of doing 35 over the limit. Shit, in MD, 35 over is arrestable. I would LOVE to have this law here. The last time I got a speeding ticket was 2004.
So, what you're saying is, rather than give up 1.45% of your income, you'd rather run and risk killing a family?
You are a fucking idiot. A GIANT fucking idiot.

So many neons so little time.

Too bad you’re comparing net worth and yearly income.invujerry wrote:

The fine was based on net worth, not yearly income.
The guy has a net worth of $20,000,000. That doesn’t mean he earns $20,000,000 a year. Let’s say he earns $4,000,000 a year for the last 10 years and half of that goes to his net worth… $20,000,000. So he gets a 1.45% fine of his net worth.
Let’s look at the guy making $50,000 a year for the last 10 years. Let’s say half of his income goes toward his net worth (car, house, ect…). That’d be a $250,000 net worth from 10 years of work ($500,000 total income). He gets fined 1.45% of that. $3,625! That be a fine of 7.25% yearly income, or almost four weeks pay.
A 16 year old would have a net worth of maybe $100 and a few Tic-Tacs. He'd be fined for $1.45.
You could also look at the 30 year old who has no net worth (rents, blows money on hookers and crack...) He'd get fined $1.45 too.

Rich people have earned the freedom to get tickets and brush them off because they have so much money. They earned that right. NOT! Being wealthy does not give you the right to break the law, because you can afford the fine. They would still end up losing their freedom after enough offenses.
And, if I owned a supercar and knew I was about to get pulled over and fined over a quarter of a million dollars, fuck the cops, I'm running - and I'm going to plow right into and kill your innocent family of four that passed this stupid fucking law. Ufortunately the mentality of some ppl. I could see some of our celebs doing this...

03blackrt, yeah I did yearly instead of wealth, my bad.

Lazy liberal!! Hahaha, that's the biggest joke I've heard in a while! I'm a blue collar worker, and a libertarian, but I still think this policy should be adopted on a state-to-state level.UriahRR wrote:Bunch of lazy liberals
