Yup....
I've never had a harddrive fail like this before....
So a hard end to the story, as everyone has mentioned always have a backup. Also remember this too, even CD's and DVD's fail which I ran into a few years ago myself also.

Yup. Burned disks have roughly a 10-15 year shelf life. This is why it's importatnt to have a RAID set-up of some sort, off site back-up, and hell, even a back-up to a cloud somewhere.

Is it overkill? Depends on how important that data really is. You can have a huge home server, but what if your house burns down?

In that case, some form of offsite storage.

There are companies that offer these services but it can also be as simple as storing media in a bank safety deposit box, friend or relatives place.

Yup. that's why i mentioned offsite.

I still need to set up a server at my parents house for offiste storage. One of these days I'll get to it. Until then, if there's ever a fire, my drobo is easy to grab and is near the door.

10years worth of software gone....
Lets explain it as this....
$215 for Windows 7 Pro I did have a copy of this OS for a customer, now multiply this on average for every OS I had, all the programs, etc....
Definately a major loss for me and from now on I am going to make a copy of everything.....
