Need your opinion 2gn about wrecked car!

Well a local SRT-4 owner that I am friends with totaled his car mid last month. Tire blew out, went up curb and hit a pole pretty bad. Car still ran perfect after wreck. Hood buckled a tiny bit, drivers headlight gone, along with fender of course with internal frame damage to the A-pillar which caused it to be totaled. Insurance wrote him a very decent check for $10,XXXk PLUS he got to keep the car. Only has 39k on it. He wants to get atleast $2k out of it. But would like $2500. This seems like a steal to me. Everything is fine on it except for what is mentioned, even the front fascia! It is 50 trimmed with all the supporting mods. Full 3'' exhaust, MPX big front mount, RC 750 injectors, Boomba fuel rail, has viper inspired seats, DEPO black LED tails, solid mounts, wideband, DSP, etc etc... Seems too good to be true. He is even willing to tow it to where ever I decide to put it for free since he has free towing. He just needs to get rid of it since his buddy backed out of buying it from Texas and had things come up. Its sitting at the car shop he works at and his boss needs it gone ASAP.

What do you guys think? Should I go for it?

Also he has a clean title for it but needs to switch it to a salvage title, not sure how that works. So can someone explain the process of getting a wrecked car from a private owner?

Thanks guys for all and any input!

Yeah not even thinking about fixing it.... Definatley part it out and make some money back. Would make a good swap project once I skin it out. I can make time for parting it out, but acquiring a wrecked 1st gen or 2nd gen with a good body for cheap and performing the swap would be a task, but a fun one at that. :)

you would make more than your money back on the car. Probably make what you paid for the car back with just selling the parts needed to swap. Side skirts would get you some loot too. Rear bumper would reel some money in for you too.

dibs on everything needed for a swap!

seriously...

IDK how Oklahoma laws are, but in Ohio, if the title is clean, He could just sign it over. Doesn't seem to kosher, that the insurance gave him the check before seeing the title as salvage. I had to convert mine before I could even think about getting a check.

I bought a rolled/totaled vehicle that had not been turned in to the insurance with a clean title. I then used that title to license the one I built from 3 separate trucks. Suck it CarFax, find a report on that.

But just sayin' if the State is none the wiser, he should be able to sign it to you. It is his responsibility to take care of that anyways. .

What you do with it after that is on your conscience. Of course if you just use it for parts, you have a clean title for w/e. You would need as many of the VIN stickers etc to make it truly stick tho, and those don't come off too easily. About every body panel has one on the inside somewhere.

i wouldnt even worry about a title, just rip the bastid apart and sell/keep what you need. just dont go trying to sell the shell, send it to the scrapper.
BTW i'll take the rear bumper off your hands for a deal.

The shell would need to be chopped up. Scrap yards still want a title if it is recognizable as a car. Got to show it isn't stolen ya know.
Edit:
If the guy is agreeable he could sign it to the scrap yard, and hope they transfer it. Otherwise it will always show as his possession.

yeah, i had to do the same thing for a truck one time, They at least wanted it cut in half if you didnt have a title.

Bill I am in Kansas not Oklahoma.

Good information about the title though. I am guessing since he got the money for the car already from the insurance they made it into a salvage title already? HE does have the title in his hand, but of course its going to show it as clean..He just needs a re-print showing its a salvage title. Not sure how that process works.

 He could report it stolen. I need some sort of title showing that I OWN it.

Hmmm good idea about the scrap yard. So you are saying have my friend sign it over to the scrap yard, then have the scrap yard sign it over to me? I am sure there will be a price for that. :(

I think he meant you would buy the car and the guy would sign the title, but once you're done with it, just turn the title from him in to the junkyard.

Basically, that way you buy the car and don't have to worry about the title.

Seems a bit shady to do that way too, because the guy could always say you took his car, blah blah blah.

this was my thought exactly, thanks sean. I figured since you said he was your "friend" you wouldnt have any problems with him reporting it stolen or any BS like that.

WTF was I looking at?

Congrats on the purchase!

If it is already a salvage title, and you don't plan to fix it, then you only need to have it transfered into your name, if you want to go by the book.

You don't really need it transfered, as long as it is signed over and notarized, it should be all the proof you need of ownership.

As far as the BMV is concerned, it would still be titled in his name.

IDK if you could take the signed title to the scrap yard, and have their notary witness you signing it to them without having it it your name. I would call first.

Prolly not, as the state will want it's sales tax/transfer fees from both you, and the crap yard.
