Ca smog inspection vs other state inspection

Post by alsey_seven » Thu Apr 28, 2011 4:36 pm

ok all ca drivers know ca smog test is the most hated thing in our state but i didn't really know how lucky we are. i finally read that other states like NY inspection is also ruthless. I didn't know that they inspect tires seat belts brakes etc etc. shit in ca you pass smog and that it no problem they don't car about anything else. and we don't have to place some inspection sticker on our window.

....um...yeah? However, most people don't have a problem passing the other inspection procedures. It's the emissions inspection most people are worried about. VT inspection tried to fail me for having a small crack in the headlight, but it's not as harsh as failing a smog test.

With the exception of areas near Chicago having emissions testing, we don't have inspections in Indiana. I used to get emissions testing voluntarily on Earth Day every April but I haven't seen this offered the last few years.

There are no inspections here in Pensacola, FL.
Drove my neon until it was killed in a flood.

What inspections?

I was very happy when I moved to Florida and I found out there weren't any vehicle inspections. I hated getting the car inspected when I lived in California.

FL has the most lenient car inspection laws in the county. I saw a barstool rigged up to drive on the street. And yes, it had tags.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Might be due to all the bases and airports in this state.

Didn't FL used to have inspections? I seem to remember a state inspection site outside of Tampa when I was working lawn care back in the early 80's (I think that my boss had to take his pickup there but my memory is fuzzy).

I'm a licensed safety/emissions inspector in North Carolina and our rules are not as harsh... I mean, safety wise if wires are showing on the tire, the serpentine belt is about to rip, or they have bulbs that are out... I don't think those are "harsh" rules. As far as emissions, we just hook up the vehicle and do an OBD II Emissions test... if the engine light is on, it will fail... if it's off and it passes OBD II, then emissions is kosher.

I just hate seeing cars on the road that have one brake light bulb that works out of seven... friggin can't even tell if the dang car is slowing down or not. Or when people drive with tires until they blow up because it's got absolutely no tread left.

Most people are idiots and have no idea that they are endangering the lives of others on the road as well as their own (and their families who ride with them). For this reason I almost wish CA did have DOT style inspections.

This will be my first year having to SMOG the Neon since I bought it new in 05. I guess it fell under the requirements for the 5 year new model exemption. I think it will be every 2 years after that though, like everyone else.

That's very interesting... as long as my engine light isn't on, I can pass emissions. Sometime in the future whenever I can upgrade my exhaust, I'll be running no muffler and/or cat and a defouler to prevent any MIL coming on... and then I can just inspect my own car :D

We have to pass emissions once every two years but no safety inspection unless a vehicle changes hands or you get a fixit ticket.

I'd welcome an annual or two year safety inspection requirement. I wouldn't have a problem because I keep my cars in order, but it would really mess up some people here.

I agree, it's great for those of us who keep the vehicle safe but there are too many retards out there that use it as a way to not maintain a vehicle.

Texas vehicle inspections: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/

When I arrived here last year I had my Neon from Canada inspected... no problems... and it was not draconian but does
need to be done annually.

I view the whole thing as a revenue generation program.

Vehicle inspections do not exist in Canada... except in British Columbia where they do the smog inspection similar to California.

Aside from revenue generation the inspections do serve to ensure that the basic safety requirements are met for vehicles... but to me it is totally silly that brand new vehicles must undergo inspection. My Fit had to be inspected and I had to pay for that. WTF... it is new!

Brand new vehicles being inspected is stupid.

I'd think a couple year exception of safety and emissions inspections would be reasonable for brand new vehicles because what are the odds of a safety failure in the first 2-3 years.

In Ontario we do emissions every 2yrs and safety only when transferring titles. Neon has passed e-test 4 or 5 times now with flying colours. Cat + stock ECU = pass every time. Worst they ding you for is a gas cap for evap.

I think that's about all an OBD-II car has to do in the States.

Cat: check
No codes: check
Gas cap: check

Pass

Pre-96 cars get either a treadmill test or an idle test in MD.
