Problem solved, thank you!
My PC locked up Friday night and I used the application manager to kill both the Internet Explorer session that was hosed and the resulting dump from IE freezing up. Now if I try to load a website from a Google search, all of the pics on the site are just boxes with X's in them. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to fix this?

That's a new one. Have you tried using IE, or Firefox to see what happens?
I have no clue on how to fix it tho.
You could try a system restore, or uninstalling/re installing Chrome.
Edit: Dur, reading pwn's me you were using IE, the google thing just registered in my brain as Chrome. brain fart.
I rarely use IE anymore, unless there is something Chrome won't do.

for the heck of it, create a new user profile....
Assuming Win 7
Click
Start
Control Panel
User Accounts and Family
Then
Add or Remove user accounts
Create a new account
When you create a new account make sure you make it an administrator
Once the new account is created, log out and log in to the new account you created and see if the problem still happens. If the problem is gone, your main profile is infected with a virus. Just transfer anything over to the new account you created and then delete your old account when finished...

You shouldn't need a new computer. This should be a relatively minor thing to fix.
Absolute worst case is you will have to reinstall the operating system, which isn't really a big deal if you have the disc that came with the computer.
What operating system are you running? Have you ran a full virus scan lately? What virus software are you using?
Start with a system restore to a past known time when this problem didn't happen. This may solve the problem.

This is so embarrassing. I worked in IT for 14 years but know almost nothing about PCs (I was a mainframe operator- my college degree is useless now). Turns out that my AdAware software was responsible- all I had to do was uncheck a box and, voila!, back in business.
I really appreciate everyone rallying to my aid! I still want a new PC. I would like to have a tower with two bays so that I can have SACD and Blu-ray drives (I can't burn DVDs or CDs at the present). Plus mine runs Windows XP and I need to upgrade.

you can upgrade all that without a new pc. drives, OS, memory, its all upgradeable. i'm sure the only issue you would have gramps, is having someone install it for you...Midnight_Rider wrote:This is so embarrassing. There aren't may people around here that don't want a new PC. Hell, I wouldn't be opposed to a new one that would make my current one look like a paper weight, but that pesky money issue is there
My only real desire is to upgrade the main OS hard drive to an solid state drive, but they still cost too much for me to do that. They are definitely getting better, but not there for me yet. I just bought a BD-R, and only because it was on sale
and it's still sitting in the box next to the computer
What computer do you have? It doesn't have two 5.25" bays on it?

Dell Vostro 220. Just checked- I guess that there is another bay behind a non-operating door. Huh, learn something new every day.racer12306 wrote:What computer do you have? It doesn't have two 5.25" bays on it?

Just looked that computer up to see a picture of it. Looks like it definitely has two 5.25" bays in it.
They generally only install one and the other slot is just blocked off. That pops out and another drive can go in.
We could probably walk you through a DVD-R install, its very easy and most of the time won't even require a driver install. Open the case, two screws and then plug it in. Only a slight hangup if you are out of SATA/IDE ports but that's an easy fix.
Good DVD drives are less than $20, but I don't know if you can buy American made ones.

Oh, I already know that there aren't any US-made ones. I had bookmarked a Sony SACD-capable drive some time back- I'll have to check for availability when I get the funds.racer12306 wrote:Good DVD drives are less than $20, but I don't know if you can buy American made ones.

Not sure how that compares to a Dell 2400, but without the HT processor, ours wouldn't play DVD's without a jittery picture, or it would freeze the picture. The audio was fine.
I installed the HT processor, and it works like a dream now.
HT = hyper threading, or dual core, which is way outdated now. The 2400 is m.y. 2004 vintage. It is a dinosaur, but it does what I need it to. It has XP and does just fine. Vista is the one that sucks the life out of the memory, and CPU.
Burning DVD's takes less out of it than playing them. I didn't have too much trouble burning them on that PC, I just couldn't watch them, until I got the processor from a PC they were throwing out at work. (I get t remove the hard drives and pitch them, but if there is something else in there...)

I probably wouldn't burn too many DVDs or Blu-rays but miss being able to make compilation CDs (better to have those than originals in case the car is broken into). Not sure how the SACD would work- doubt that a PC would be set up for 5.1 Surround but the SACD Audio track would sound better than the standard CD one.
