^^Just a neon with a built motor, turbo, better suspension, better tranny, better clutch, LSD*!!!, 4 wheel discs, better interior, 17" wheels and better tires, better exterior pieces, etc etc.

I think the term "just a neon" is BS considering weve been known to smoke lots of unsuspecting cars, and neons are much better than anyone gives them credit for. But the srt only shares a few things in common with the neon, mainly the exterior styling, frame/chassis, and lots of little odds and ends. but ive come to realize that it really is a whole different beast. worth the $$$ too, which is something i used to argue about. haha no biggie like i said someday im gonna give one a run for its money. someday!

Look at it this way though. Here in Canada, a new srt-4 is around 30,000. A new Neon is around 16,000. That leaves you with a $14,000 difference! Can you imagine the possibilites??? It just makes sence to buy a neon over an srt4, if you think about it.

And 03-04 cobras can be had for $25-30k.... Thats what I will buy... one day, after a new truck..... *sigh*

My thoughts exactly . . .

Would you consider a regular neon that has had an srt-4 engine swap, and everything else to match the srt-4 including exterior pieces a real srt-4? Or would you just say "i made my car look and drive like an srt-4 but it's still a regular neon.

Such as, would you go around telling people "I have an srt-4"

either way, its still just a neon!!

Hey OB. My car has better suspension stock, better turning radius, better mpg, and 4 wheel disc brakes w/ tration control.

I would not consider the fact that the srt shared the whole platform and exterior(minus hood and rear bumper) "a few things" Bascially they have a different drivetrain and that is it.

Posted: Wed Feb 08, 2006 3:50 pm
by OB
^well i would consider the drivetrain to be a BIG deal. last time i checked everyone wasnt on this forum to talk about how great their frames and body designs were. when it comes down to it the drivetrain is the main part of a car IMO. i do agree that an srt is a neon, but a stock neon just doesnt compare. the rt is closer, but still a far cry.

good point about the saved money from buying a neon. but if you look at all the work and time you have to put in making the neon COMPARE to a STOCK srt, it might not look quite as great. I spent 13 on my neon brand new w/rebates, and the srt cali edition was 28k on the showroom, with standard srts goin for 25k. so an average of 10-15k saved would have to buy a LOT of stuff to match an srt power wise, and a good deal more suspension/brake wise too. With 10k and some top notch mechanical skills you could prob make 230whp and upgrade the rest of the car too.or maybe spend less and do the srt swap. I like the idea of a 2.0 having more balls than the big srt 2.4, but its not like i had 30k and only spent half.

I bought the neon cuz i couldnt afford the srt, not cuz did some math and decided that my 30k in cash could be spent makin a weak car better than a nice expensive one... realistically, saying that u got a neon cuz u could mod it with the extra $$ is an excuse for not having the money for an srt. But fast neons ARE cooler than fast srts. Sleepers own!

^^ Damn 13 w/ rebates ? I got my brand new SXT (03) (with the sport apparance package including fog lights) for 11,500 after taxes

Then i totaled it . . . so it was all useless

Anyways - Yes if your going from STOCK SXT to "SRT" it would take alot . . .

And I would agree . . . The logic behind the "Money saved vs money I could put into my car" ratio is alittle off . . . .

When i got my first neon (the sxt) - I wanted an SRT - Couldnt afford it . . . So I had the same thought process . . . hmm i could put that much into my neon and blah blah - But when the real world set in . . . after paying 210 a month for the car and 200 a month for insurance . . . i didnt have the extra 200 a month to put into the SXT

Im sorta playing both sides of the fence here i know . . . but i dont see anyone right after buying a neon take the rest of there 10k and drop the car off at a performance shop or anything . . . .

A plus side i could see by just getting the SRT in the first place would be insurance . . .yes its abit more expsensive to insure an SRT over an R/T (in my case) But . . . When i totaled my SXT i was out abunch of money in after market parts . . .

Of course insurance is high for me no matter what i drive . . . two totaled cars and two speeding tickets (10 over and 50 over)arent so good . . . .

Anyways . . . .

I've seen a grand total of two SRT-4's in my area since I've been driving my Neon. St. Joseph is only 85,000 people though, and I don't get down to K.C. enough to count that at all. As such, when and if I do see one, my head usually snaps around real quick, because it's like seeing a new C6 or something.......'cept...........not near as cool as a C6. People in the midwest buy trucks and SUV's, that's what I see new on the road. Very few cool cars. Kinda sad.
One very big +1.

it was 13 before rebates i said that wrong. about 11-5 for me too after the junk. just to clear that up..

i agree with the insurance deal, that and the huge monthly payments make the srt a "rich boy only" car IMO. anyone who buys one new must be single and have a sick job. If u ask me, any brand new car for an 18 yr old (now 19) is impressive.

They usually have rich parents that co-sign for them so if they can't make the payments mommy and daddy will have to and junior will be trouble. (Hopefully)

my papa cosigned for me but he aint rich. only way i could get low interest rate. 225/mo and another 175/mo insurance. ouch. an srt would be like 350/mo and 250/mo insurance for me prob cuz im young. no chance!

yeah...all the young people are wrecking srt4s like crazy...but I guess we have them to thank for the spare srt swaps, trannies, interiors, bumpers and spoilers :D i like the srt4 for all the goodies they bring us regular neon owners. all those doors proabbly would still be waiting to open, if it wasnt for the srt4. I do give them that much credit :)

I pay $210 for insurance for my SE :\, and it used to be a lot more. At least that's what my mom makes me pay her lol, I'm glad my parents cover the car payment though, I'm just going to be stuck with paying for college :(

i think its a lot better when you put the work and effort into modding your car...
as far as buying a 'regular' neon and then dropping off what you saved on not getting the srt... Jason is a good example, he bought the white r/t and then dropped the rest of the money on the wrecked srt...

as far as i go... for speed: 2 wheels > 4
162 MPH...
at the track i was running high 11's --- can an srt do better than that?

But lets not forget. . . .we are all pretty much on the same team here . . . .

I heard someone describe it as a PL-body car - the srt and neon, so in essence, they are same car, just different drivetrains, etc. So, yeah they are same, but biether is a neon. The neon is a name you slap on the car, just like srt4.

well that is beacuse you are not an asshole[1 word 2 i dont know] we have to remember that 95% of other neon guys are ricers and are stupid but that is good beacuse they cant drive ie our sxt's and r/t are faster beacuse of drivers you should have seen this kids face when i a 51 year old woman smoked him comming out of a mitdsubishi dealer in an evo mr with my bone stock r/t ah sweet revenge fucking ricers ruining the world for everybody

I'm not uncomfortable at all when I see an SRT or a Neon. I started out with my '97 DOHC Plymouth Expresso Coupe, and then ended up buying the wife a '98 SOHC Dodge Neon Coupe.

I always loved the SRT since I saw the prototype with the supercharger and wished one day to have one. So when I got a better job and could afford it, we traded in the wife's '98 in for the SRT-4, and I have regretted it ever since. It would have been paid off this year.

Now, almost two years later, I bought the wife a 2005 SXT so she can have her own car again. So the '05 is my 4th Neon, and I love them all, SRT, SXT, SE, ES, SRT Design, it's all good as long as you can respect what others do, even if it's not your own taste or style.

Are the VR6, 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 Jetta's all the same car in your eyes?
I hope so, and then the whole drivetrain = different car thing becomes BS.

I was thinking about this and do you get the same feeling around R/T's? When compared to your SXT they have a better suspension, engine, transmission, bigger wheels, dual exhaust etc....

i dont really care when i see a srt pull up next to me...cuz i know they can walk my lil sxt with ease..I have the srt front numper and side skirts...and a few of them tried me thinking i'm a srt. I also had the exhaust so i would sound like 1. But now i have the magnaflow which is betta 4 my car. I cant wait to get some more mods and spray a 75 shot. Now it will be my turn to eat stock or ligh modd srt 4 breakfast...ha ha aha ha right now my best ET. is 15.7......1 day i'll be doing high 13's...(hopefully by summer)

Thats a good point . . .

When I had my SXT - For some reason I wasnt scared of R/Ts . . . even though they could walk me . . . .

now I have an R/T : ) . . . other neons arent scared of me at all . . .

^That is a good point, I agree, but and r/t is ten times more rare than an srt4 in my area. ive seen only ONE since i got my car in July 05. plus, unless the driver is a 'car' person, theres a good chance they dont even know their neon is a 'performance' oriented neon. I mean, most neon owners dont buy them for performance, even r/ts are usually left stock and simply driven daily from A to B. Now if i saw a modded rt things would be different (and id also be excited haha). We all know that no one bought the srt4's on "accident", all those guys know what theyre runnin and they all prob bought those cars with the intent to race/mod them. get what i mean?

You dont know how many women I have seen driving SRTs just like any other Neon around and have no intention of modding them, they just bought them because they think they are oh so cute. Cars probably have never even seen full boost, its sad really
