Maybe they should direct their anger towards MLK's estate for granting permission, and I'm sure the estate got some sort of compensation. Funny they didn't get offended over Nike and McD's using MLK material in their commercials.

They don't stop to think that possibly some, or all of that funding, is put towards promoting MLK's message? I prefer to think of it in that light, over "selling out".

I didn't watch the game, so I never saw the commercial. I do know that at least one of King's living relatives wasn't fond of it and didn't give permission. I think that as long as FCA legitimately got permission from his estate, then the issue is a smaller deal than some have made it out to be. On the other hand, using civil rights icons to sell goods is pretty cheap and it does risk watering down the message over time.

As for the videos, two of them are independently produced and one came out in the eighties (before the internet). The other difference is that McDs was just wishing people a happy MLK Day and the Nikes are literally pushing the message of equality. Personally, I have an issue with the Nikes, because they're grossly overpriced. Trying to push a message of social justice on a pair of $160 shoes seems a little bit ironic to me, and not in a good way. The Ram commercial takes a small clip of a powerful speech and uses it for the sole purpose of...selling trucks. Which seems incredibly trivial in juxtaposition with what was going on for MLK when he gave that speech. So I understand why people don't like it. I'm not boycotting anything or writing nasty letters, but I get it.

Just as classless as selling a pair of overpriced shoes.

The Ram commercial is linked above. It honors the people that serve the community in one way or another, they really don't push the truck a whole lot in it. IMHO it was fairly tastefully done.

The Nikes got nothing but praise in the above links.

At least FCA tried to promote a little unity...

Although the use of King's words and voice was authorized by the King estate, it may have deepened an old wedge between some of his children.

That's all that legally matters... The rest is between the estate and the family, not really any of our business.

Imagine that you believed in a humanitarian cause with so much of your being that you were willing to sacrifice your life for it. Do you think that, decades later, you'd be happy that a company used part of your message to sell goods during a football game? Plenty of companies have attempted to capitalize on important historical figures to sell shit. It's nothing new in this country. I just find it kind of tacky.

My panties are in 0 bunches right now. I think it’s classless, but I wasn’t in a market for an FCA product anyway. And they should have honestly thought better of using it. But that’s what faceless corporations do *shrug*

Didnt care for the mlk ram commercial myself so I say its a waste. Could've promoted unity without that speech, plenty of other commercials did

FWIW, I don't think anyone in here was actually offended by anything. A few of us have been trying to shine some light on why someone would be offended, but as Jerry stated earlier, "panties are in 0 bunches right now."

Also, there's a little bit of irony coming from a guy who was offended by the term "zombie Jesus day".
