Looking at another SRT. Advice/Input please! 35k=190k miles

Post by MyNeonSaysHi » Thu Dec 26, 2013 1:23 am

Link to SRT-4

This local neon SRT-4 ACR edition caught my eye. Thinking about buying it. Going to check it out this weekend.

What do you guys think? Good price? OR stay away from it?

A bit more insight:
I can get it for $8k. (What he owes on it)

He said the car doesn't like to downshift from 4th to 3rd. But upshifting to 3rd is fine.

As you can see it doesn't have the ACR wheels, or struts. Story behind that. But I have ACR struts and wheels that can go on it. :)

CF hood and ugly exhaust. :/ But super low miles and its an ACR... Only 25 made in red with sunroof.
I have the VIN too if anyone can check that for me. Supposedly in two minor accidents but the title is clean and in hand.

Looks very good otherwise- great miles on the clock. You can take care of the small details (wheels, struts, hood, etc.) and then the car will be perfect. Tranny situation sounds familiar.

Don't understand how a car with only 35k has transmission issues. Must of been driven hard by previous owners. Go figure.

Or perhaps a defective tranny that decided to show its true colors after this many miles. I like to think positive. :D

Exactly. Plus the fact that people put friction modifier in with their ATF+4 which actually breaks down the synchros faster. Didn't have issues with mine until 130k and that was due to a bad clutch fork.

Sad that this turned out to be a bust. Hope that you can find another candidate- a good one- soon.

Now he is thinking the car is going to get impounded. I am curious how there weren't any red flags in the system when he got it registered in Colorado with only 30k on it.

Lol, nothing like a cluster swap to lower the mileage.

I doubt a mileage discrepancy would get caught in most states. They aren't going to take the time to do a car fax for each car that gets registered. Pretty much up to the buyer to check it out, ie "Buyer Beware".

wow ... from 183k miles to 34k miles ... someone had fun swapping the cluster.

But now that op link for the car isn't working ... says its now for sale anymore ...

I must say ... nice catch on that and helping save the op from buying a nightmare.

Glad to save you from some serious heartache. I feel real bad for the current owner. I wonder if they got a bank loan or got it from a used dealership

Our "15 year old car at the time" 1996 neon only had 43,000 miles. Car fax and history of mileage when repairs were made through the years pretty much confirmed it. Some old guy that never left the town he lived in owned it originally, and it was sold after he passed. Can't say it seen much love once his surviving family sold it tho.

It's nearly 18 years old now, with 70,XXX miles. (Which averages out to ~35.000/9 years)

So yes they are out there, but without a service history, it is tough to know what you are really getting. You won't find much on my vehicles. I don't report my repairs.

At least in Ohio, there is no mileage verification to get plates each year, so it isn't even tracked in that aspect. I'm sort of surprised Governor Kasich hasn't regulated that too. I'm sure if there were some added tax revenue to it....

In this case, reported repairs/mileage saved one person, and burned another.

He bought it from a private individual. What is even more messed up is that it says it has 35k on the listing (Which is down, I reported it) Well according to the AutoCheck, he literally only put 800 or so miles on it... 500 which were driving the car from Colorado Springs to Topeka, KS. So that means he drove it around 400 miles or so since June!?
He said he had a loan on it but an unsecured loan so he had the title in hand.

Wonder if this was the private owner, I forgot to post this up. Quick google search of that VIN

http://truestreetcars.com/forums/off-to ... -asap.html

Last owner in NM told the current owner that he was looking to get a GTO... So I wonder if this is him? I PM'd the guy but no response even though he has been active on that forum.

Good point Bill. Pulling up a Autocheck of my silver car shows that it only has 44k miles when I registered it in 07
