Midwest storms

Post by bige1030 » Mon Mar 13, 2006 12:16 am

Is anyone here affected by these storms?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11788140/

Luckily, me, my apartment, and my car went unscathed. (I even had power the whole time :) ) However, I go to the University of Kansas, and campus was torn down by a small tornado. (Local weather geeks might chastize me for calling it a tornado, though, since it was relatively minor in the grand scheme of wind storms.)

Here in Lawrence, we got quite a bit of damage. Lots of business signs were destroyed and windows were busted by the wind. Wherever storefronts were weak, they were destroyed. Trees were downed and uprooted. Depending on where they fell, cars were destroyed and power lines were downed. Some power lines fell with the wind, while other power poles were just pushed by the wind and don't lie straight.

I was wondering the same thing... Those storms are now going past us... A lot less in intensity, though. Glad to hear you're alright... It's rough down there... I don't usually have much sympathy for people that live in weather disaster prone areas, but tornadoes are wicked harsh. My buddy lives in Florida (Tampa area) and he was complaining to me about all the hurricanes... I said, "Dude. You live in Florida. No shit. What did you expect - All of the hurricanes to cease when you moved there?"

We had 27 seprate tornado warnings in the area around me. a few towns around 30 min. away where hit hard, houses and shit taken out.

They hit the sirens here in quincy 3 times in 3 hours last night. I had the family hunkered in the hallway since we have no basement.

Quincy got away with a few broken tree limbs, Monroe City was almost wiped out, a few smaller towns right accross the river where hit hard, Springfield IL, (Where my best friend goes to school) is efectivly shut down, wallmart got taken out along with a kmart and target. there.

Im kind of a weather buff so I stayed up to watch the radars... At one point one storm right over our head had 4 oblious bow echos ( A hook in a radar image is what prompts them to issue a tornado warning based on strong rotation in a severe storm) One to the north south east and west of my quincy...

Anyways, enough rambling, it was a wild nite.

Oh hell yes. We started at 8:45am and went all the way through till after 8pm. Was awesome - I love Spring in the midwest

We had so much hail at 9am that I couldn't hear the warnings on TV. After church we went to lunch and it was beautiful, but soon enough it all started up again and we had so much rain, wind, hail, tornado warnings, and sirens I gave up trying to watch the Big 12 finals and some show about Hurricanes on TLC. :)

I work at a hotel in springfield, missouri and we are full for at least the next 3 weeks with tornado victoms. There are trees and phone lines down everywhere. Fortunately there have been less than 5 people killed that we know of.

These pictures were taken less than 15 miles from where I live.

For the past 2-3 days we were hit with them... not really bad, a lot fo flooding right now. Average for the month for rainfall here is 3.66in and it's not even the middle of the month yet and we're already past the average at 4.69in. Just a lot of rain and lightning thats about it, high winds enough to take down trees. The ground is soaked and there are retaining walls giving way around the city.... no tornados though... that's typically next month that we get more tornado warnings.

Right now it's Beautiful out but somewhat cold at 44F since the cold front came through last night. Yesterday is was overcast and rainy but atleast it was 70F

Wow, it's amazing how different it is just across the state... It was 70 here yesterday and all we've been getting are thunderstorms, and not near as much rain as you... I think we've gotten 2" of rain this month. And today... 35 degrees right now with snow flurries. :( Damn the new wheel curse!
