Potential end of forums...

Post by occasional demons » Wed Oct 28, 2020 3:04 pm

Signed into law in 1996, Section 230 was created to enable online platforms to make “good faith” efforts to moderate user-generated content deemed “objectionable” without facing legal liability over that content.
With the potential to be sued over moderating B.S. and spam content, I wouldn't risk hosting a forum. Whether the law suit has merit or not, you could be constantly plagued with legal threats. Not worth the headaches.

Actually on most all the Auto forums I use, membership rules keep things pretty well in line for risks of the hosting platforms. It's the open FB,Twitter and such accounts(sites) that really has the content posting problems to have the hosting platforms in trouble.

LOL, unless you are moderating, you have no idea. I just disapproved about 20 posts. And that is at least 4 or 5 times a day. From the average user's POV, everything looks fairly normal. At least the bulk of it, we can now disapprove posts before they are visible. Until recently, we had to delete a million posts to keep the clutter down. Unfortunately, the staff still sees all these posts, they don't disappear for us.

Without protections, this forum could be potentially sued by spammers for violating their "freedom of speech".

"to enable online platforms to make “good faith” efforts to moderate user-generated content deemed “objectionable” without facing legal liability over that content."

I deem football and porn sites objectionable to the content of this forum.... The rules are largely ignored by spammers. People we banned in the past would be able to sue for silencing them.

People that were offended over what the banned people said could sue the forum for what the offending people posted.

Big business could sue over forums over people complaining about their products, or car manufacturers suing for people helping people solving problems without getting raped by the dealerships.

It opens a whole can of worms. Basically government and big business keeping people in the dark. It would be like going back 30 years.

This is what was staring at me just in off topic this morning.

Do the rules look even remotely effective?

Rules and laws only apply to honest people.

So if they get rid of Section 230, they are letting foreign influence win by taking away the freedom of expression/speech on the internet.

Sure, there is a shitload of stuff (like above) I wish wasn't out there, but it's better than nothing being out there, for fear of being litigated against.

As an example: When Yahoo got rid of the old message boards (like 15 years back) there was a ton of nitpicking and BS posted on them, even worse than the recent message boards. But there were also links posted to all sorts of lets just say, "stuff" (that i'm sure the government, big business, and big religion were not in favor of) that were very useful, if you weeded through the shit. All that is long gone now.

It like when satellite dish first came out, you could watch any station in the country/continent, but then they blocked it so you could only see local stuff. Hmmm, wonder why?

We used to be able to see Canadian stations, Washington State stations, North Carolina, live news feeds on and on... All that has been taken away. And you can't blame one administration or the other, because then why didn't the next just reverse the policy?

Both administrations in this case want to get rid of 230. Just a backhanded way of not having the balls to call it what it really is.

In practice, the law shields any website or service that hosts content - like news outlets' comment sections, video services like YouTube and social media services like Facebook and Twitter - from lawsuits over content posted by users.

When the law was written, site owners worried they could be sued if they exercised any control over what appeared on their sites, so the law includes a provision that says that, so long as sites act in "good faith," they can remove content that is offensive or otherwise objectionable.

The statute does not protect copyright violations, or certain types of criminal acts. Users who post illegal content can themselves still be held liable in court.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/explainer-wh ... 25260.html

So basically since certain individuals don't like being moderated, or that there is too much misinformation on radical left/right websites, they want to take down protections for everyone.

This law does not choose sides, or the scope of the websites it protects.

Vote for your congress people wisely, because that's where the law is changed. It doesn't matter what buffoon is the president.

Well those "politics" could mean you won't have a car site.... So it is very relevant.

And you can bet they wouldn't have stopped there if successful, if internet hosting protections weren't in place then. This is hardly simply a political issue, it is a liberties issue too.

And both candidates support removal of the law, so it is a neutral topic as far as "political" as far as I am concerned.

There is a reason we don't post Factory issued Service Manuals on the forums due to copyright issues. They would have made assisting working on your car a copyright issue too.
