The Weather Thread
Re: The Weather Thread
I could have EASILY spent $300 for fuels IF I had done it all at closer "normal" stations. The thing that really irks me is that our most local distributor for fuels(14 miles away) supplies these same "reservation" places as well as home delivery and local area stations....It ain't all just TAX price differences....SOMEBODY is playing games on the populace! I don't mind making a profit, BUT making a killing is is bad form!

What do you need diesel for? You warm your house with one of those diesel burner things? ???04rebel wrote: ↑Mon Mar 08, 2021 10:38 amIt's SUPPOSED to warm up here for the week into the mid 50'e (daytime) with nights still in the low 20's. Sunday I made an early am emergency run to get 10 gal diesel($3.03) as we ran out in the night. After worship I then took our barrel and 2 5 gal jugs and got 65 gal at the "res" station at 2.67/gal. Was an expensive Sunday with a total of $200.00 for Diesel and another $25 for GAS for the T&C (at $2.37)
This mornings low was 6^ !!!!

Re: The Weather Thread
Fuel oil furnace. Diesel is basically the same thing.
Back in the '80's when the fuel crunch was on, it's the reason my parents went with a coal/wood fired boiler. Fuel oil cost them over $3000 for the season.
That was 1980's dollars. Probably a bit more now.
The wood burner was $1000, but it was paid for in the first month of the following winter.
That boiler has long went on to the graveyard, and they use an outdoor boiler and a heat exchanger to heat the water in the house. Homeowners insurance policies pretty much dictate that they will not cover your home with a wood burner inside.
They have been burning wood for over 30 years now. It helps having ~100 acres available to source the wood from the cost being mostly your time, other than fueling and maintaining the saws, tractor, and renting a wood processor every couple years. Still cheaper than fuel oil. and the house is far warmer. The old fuel oil furnace never did a good job at keeping it warm, and it was expensive shitty heat.
Natural gas is not available to them. They do have a small propane set up for back up.

We had to replace our 80s gas furnace with a new one last winter. That wasn't cheap. Definitely better than the old oil furnace, though. My buddy has one of those and it costs a fortune to fill up.

We had to replace the "furnace" on our Geothermal, as it was over 16 years old when we bought the house. That was far from cheap. But the low cost of operation makes up for it.
It helped the realtor got us a home warranty as a courtesy, and that covered $3000 of the cost. They only pay out what the repairs would be, despite the parts being no longer available. Better than nothing I guess. $3000 less we had to pay.

In '93 we bought an airtight wood stove and fit and enclosed it in our homes open front fireplace. Back then I could get seasoned firewood for $25/face cord. Now it's $55., and on average I'll burn 16 face cord each season.
He have an OLD home built in 1879 and long before we moved in was converted to oil furnace with hot water baseboard heat. I've gotten oil consumption down to around 350 gal per season....you're right about the cost to run it, BUT finances prevent a major change right now. We do not have NG anywhere around us and I don't want propane, and town ordinance prevents installing an outside boiler on my property!(though that's what I've wished to have)
YUP, we usually start heating in mid Oct. and finally finish for a few months around MEMORIAL DAY.

Re: The Weather Thread
Were not certain when our house was built. Best guess is 1885, a lot of the nails are square, with lots of peg construction. The fireplace hasn’t been used in 25+ years and I haven’t had a chance to get someone out to take a look at it yet. I can’t even keep track of how much diesel we go through, but in January it was easily 160 gallons alone. I have the thermostats programmed to be 67 during the day downstairs, and 64 at night. Upstairs where the kids sleep is 65 at night, 67 for a few hours in the morning and right before bedtime.
If my wife decides to stay up late she usually uses a little electric space heater to warm her up some.
I wouldn’t mind doing propane, but that’s not something I can get and work on myself, so I’m hesitant to do it. I would have to rely on companies bringing it out.

Crazy man. I couldn't imagine spending that much money. Back then that is way more then today. $3k in 1985 is around $7300 today! My last monthly gas bill was $92 and I thought that was high! Thermostat set at 67.occasional demons wrote: ↑Thu Mar 11, 2021 6:50 pmFuel oil furnace. Diesel is basically the same thing.

An old friend of mine lives out in the sticks and he uses wood to heat his house. Helped him a couple years back load up cords of wood on a trailer in the rain. Not much fun!
Yikes, 160 gallons of diesel in one month. Say diesel is around $3.00 a gallon. Thats $480 in one month.

Jesus. My house must be downright tropical. My wife keeps the thermostat up at 69 or 70 during the winter and I don't mind it. We turn it off completely during the summer, though.

Our house is set at 69° year round.
In the summer with the air on, it gets down to 66 in the lower level. Coming in from the outdoors gets a bit nippy

LOL.. around me there's only about 2 weeks where opening the windows(screened) is still uncomfortably too warm. Then we have 2 window conditioners that we put in( one upstairs and one in the Livingroom). SNOWED today, but temps finally climbed to 36*. Say we have a heat wave coming next week with temps to hit high 50's to mid 60's ALL week! Unfortunately the night temps still go down to the 20's - 30's.......

Hit the high 50's here today, going back down into the 40's for the weekend, and up into the 60's next week.
Probably going to swap the summer tires on soon. If it does snow, it won't stick around long, and it isn't like I have to make the ~35 miles to work anymore.
AWD will help too, it just isn't as awesome without winter tires.
OT/
I have to figure out where the 1gn is leaking Synchromesh on my garage floor. I fear it is the case seam, which will require pulling it out and apart. Maybe I will be lucky enough for it to be an axle seal. It began leaking sitting there sometime this winter. Not like it was moving much. But it is a fairly good sized puddle.

I can attest to that. My AWD Journey did fine in the deep snow we got this year, but it wasn't the most confidence inspiring, due the the aging all-season tires on it. I think with a set of snow tires, it would have felt unstoppable. They really do make a difference.occasional demons wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 7:55 pmAWD will help too, it just isn't as awesome without winter tires.

Probably axle seal. only place where any of my neons ever seeped tranny fluid.
As you guys know weather is crazy in Kansas. We had a Tornado warning a couple days ago. EF0 Tornado touched down about 10 miles from our place. Nothing crazy. I go about my business during a Tornado warning and watch the news to see where the activity is at. Luckily it was east of me. And now tomorrow we are supposed to get 1-3'' of snow LOL

Tornados can be scary as hell. We've had a couple touch down up here, but they never cause much damage or stick around. We worry more about flooding and earthquakes.

Below freezing in the morning still, but mid 50's to low 60's by the afternoon. It drives me nuts because I need my winter coat when I leave for work, but I'll sweat my balls off if I wear it on the way home. I need it to warm up just a bit at night. Other than that, it's been pretty sunny lately, which is nice.

Man, I hate tornado season. I used to have an IL run (Indianapolis; Effingham, IL; Indianapolis) and there are so many stretches through IL on I-70 with no exits or overpasses, really bad when it hails or if there is a tornado.
My SRT is going into the dealership on Monday for annual service (about 55 miles away). The NWS forecast currently calls for rain to end overnight Sunday and dry weather for Monday and Tuesday. I sure hope so as I try to never have the car out in the wet.

Had some NICE weather for a while here, but it's going back into mid 50's high and 32* nights. Still evening woodstove fires and furnace run in the wee morning hours for 5:00am wake up.
Re: The Weather Thread
Back to regular spring weather here. Low-mid sixties with cloud cover and occasional rain. We've been getting some sun breaks, which is nice. The eighty-degree weekend we got was super nice, but kind of a fluke. I've been seeing on Facebook that parts of the country got snow about a week ago. That must really suck.
