My BOSS's garbage can.

Post by GTS » Tue Mar 28, 2006 1:32 pm

The other day I was in his office and we were talking about a truck of his that rolled over with some 120000$ worht of Shrimp in the trayler. THe thing rolled over 2-3 times and everything is a total damage.

The tracktor trailer is a mess.
Shrimp all over the place.
A building near the side of the road is nocked down.
Some 100yd of guard rail is missing from the highway and guess what.

The Driver is ok, but the company is some 300000$ under.

O well. I laughed when I saw this.

DUDE - have you never heard of Student Loans? Go to this website: FAFSA
And apply there! They will pay for almost every type of school.

FAFSA is paying a total of 6k out of the 31k i need. the rest is a 'parent loan' i need to get. they said that unless my parents make 20k or less, i wont get much money. who the fuck makes less than 20k and can afford kids and food?!!!

the reason i need money is cuz im moving in august to be close to school, and as most of you know, it costs a LOT to move out nowadays, not to mention go to school full time while trying to make rent and whatnot. good thing my awesome gf is helping a ton by workin extra so we can do it! either way i need to save almost every cent, unless i manage to save extra money by staying home and not eating out/using gas. and all that goes to the car fund. so there u have it.

re-apply after you move out... then you'll get more.

actually, it doesnt exactly work like that. Ive been looking deep into this for over a month, and so have my parents. Until youre 24 years old, the government considers you a dependant to your parents. there are a few exceptions, including those enlisted in the armed forces, legally emancipated, and legally orphaned. other than that, no matter what, youre parents HAVE to be involved financially as a backup, or they wont give you shit. weve been over it a million times. even if i live alone, the gov still wants to know how much my parents make and whether they can "contribute", so i get less $$$. its a bick fuckin scam to make money off the interest of the loan, but its also the only way a lot of people go to school, so we have to deal with it. If anyone thinks thats not true, please prove otherwise.

Thats true, fasfa only takes you so far. But why 31k man? What school are you going to? If you are just going into college it would be wise to go to a community or instate college and transfer later, its the same shit just cheaper.

im going to UTI, and since its a private tech school its much more expensive. plus its accelerated so ill be done and qualified in 15 months. I should have my career in full swing by my early 20's. I dont have the patience for a 4 year, nor the interest in all the blah stuff they teach. I dont need gen ed so a community college is useless as well. If i wanna be into cars for a career, this is the right way to go. The $$$ part is the only thing holding me back, its just so damn expensive! thats not even the point tho, a loan is a loan, but getting moved out and fuckin workin and going to school and trying to pay for the car and whatnot is what worries me.

Ahh yea thats different, I thought you were just going out of state to go to college just because. Loans do suck, good luck with that.

Just one thing - if it is only 15 months, why not stay at home then?

its 60+ miles from home, and weve been wanting to move out forever. I know i could commute, but thats brutal. traffic on 80 is horrible. I just feel like all this needs to happen. we also have a roommate who needs to move out as well, and my girl will be able to transfer to work within 1 miles from our house instead of 10-15. its all around good for everyone. none of this is 100% for sure tho, so who knows. still in the works with the Fin aid.

Apologies for the thread hijack...

OB- I just did a quick search on 'automotive scholarships' and those two were the top ones; I bet if you googled it you could come up with a bunch more, also look at some of the auto shops in your town, they might be able to 'sponsor' you even if it is just the cost of books. Fastweb is great since its not limited to one industry and I get weekly emails on all the scholarships/grants that could apply to my situation and all the relevant deadlines and information. Your school should also have a listing of available scholarships if you poke around on their financial aid website. Also, some larger places/chains will actually help pay for your schooling provided you work for them for a few years; may be something to look into.

Ben will get a bit more FinAid than you probably will; he's 24 (independent from parents) and by the time he goes to school we'll be married and it will list two in the household (more money since they figure higher expenses) but as it is he will still have to borrow about 18-20k and I'll have to find a good job to pay the bills while he is studying. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

One more thing, remember that whatever you sacrifice now (like more bills in your own place) will pay for itself later. I understand driving 60 miles on a horrible freeway sucks, so I can't argue that point. Good luck to you bro! I hope they give you what you need!

I know that when i get outta school i should have a good full time job as an entry level mechanic (not makin nearly as much as you think), but if i pay my dues for 3-4 years i should be able to get into management, make some money, and pay some shit off, and i hope to open some sort of shop once i do everything and learn what i need to know. They say that nothing pays in the auto business like having your own business, and id love to work for myself and make good money doing what i love. its everyones dream, but im actually shootin for it. thanks for the words and help guys, ill let you know what happens as i find out more info.

you could always get a 'contract marriege', although these may be hard to get out of sometimes :D.

gov't grants are part of the whole FAFSA thing, it is not a separate form that you need to fill out.

you could always find a job that has tuition reinburstment. my job pays 100% for my tuition and i only work 3 days a week. the catch is that i have to work for them for a year after i'm done with school. which a year isn't that much... its just more experience so you can move on.

lithia dealerships (common in norcal) offer a program like that, but i dont think you start until AFTER school, then they pay back the loans if i sign a contract. im gonna go to their seminar sometime soon and learn more about it. the catch is you have to be a 4.0 student, they only take top of the class people, not just anyone.
