RB1 esque stereo

Post by Dranz » Mon Aug 06, 2012 9:55 am

It seems as I get older my tastes are changing. Where before I wanted a 7" tv screen staring me in the face, I now want something sofisticated and almost OE looking. So naturally I was looking at the RB1 and RB4 units. It had everything I wanted except DVD... So I found this Chinese unit.

Model#: QL-Jep816
Price: $412 shipped
Brand: Autodvdgps
Vendor site: eBay

Image
Lots of functions BT, GPS(sd card), multi taking(gps+radio, stereo, BT, or DVD).
The list goes on. Price tag? $412 shipped. So I bought it.
Image
Plus, check it out!
Image
I did have issues with it when I first got it a week ago. None of the face buttons worked, and it would randomly shut off. Turns out whoever put this together tightened the face board too much which held the power button down. After that fix, works excellent! But time will tell if it was worth it. But so far I say it most definitely is.

:-k

Really can't knock it for being Chinese. Most are made there anyways.

It is just up front about it. Brand name? Link?

(In case anyone was curious, I don't plan on buying one anytime soon)

ha! I considered what I believe to be the same model really hard back when I still had my RB4. unfortunaely with the custom blue lighting I had done in the car the green lighting on the stereo simply would not look right in my car. These do look like good units so, keep us updated on how this thing performs......Id be interested to know if you can change the back color on this thing. does look sweet on your car and props for being one of the first to try it

From what I see, you cannot change the color without physically changing out the LEDs. Because of this, I'm doing the gauge cluster lights green... I had blue ones, but it doesn't look right.

It does have pre-outs for front rear and a mono sub. I'm assuming they are 2v...
I changed the cluster LEDs to green to match.

Yeah. You can use your fingers, but you have to be quite agile sometimes... Looks like the user interface was created for a larger screen.

this sounds silly, but does the stock 6 disc work with it? lol. I saw an aux in/out and just wondered. I am also wondering about map updates for the gps... lol

Stock 6 disc does not out of the box. But I was looking at setting it up through the audio in... Just not sure how to get them to interface yet... It does however have a simulated 6 disc changer where you can load up to 6 CDs into a memory bank for instant access.

Looks like it has good reviews on their website. Then again they are all in broken English and the entire site looks sketchy.

The longer I have this unit, the more cool stuff I find out. I can load different logos. Custom or pick from a bunch. I can change the backgrounds. Every button does something on each screen, it's pretty cool. I have had zero issues with this since the initial over tightened back plate.

wow that thing looks amazing. it maintains a sort of stock look to the car to. now i'm considering getting that in a few months if its still available. i wonder how hard it is to swap out the leds on it though. personally i'd go all red like the bmw's have.

Yeah, the upgraded OEM look is what I was going for. This unit is still working flawlessly. I love this thing. If you have the money, go for it!

i'm actually curious if we could fit the slightly larger oem unit in our dash without much modification.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DVD-GPS-NAVI-RA ... 5968014%26

it has a 5inch screen on it.

Those are CAN Bus IIRC. It is not compatible with our PCI bus.

I think the can bus would only apply if we wanted to use the steering wheel controls. it specified a can bus box to use steering wheel controls. though swapping this in and then adding a steering wheel with those controls on it would be pretty sick imo. in terms of the head unit i think we would just need the harness plug from that year vehicle to make the install easier. i just want something that looks more factory with a slightly bigger screen than the one the op posted. that looks like its the size of my android cell phone.
