How can you tell?

How can you tell if struts are blown out? I don;t mean when they're on the car.. I mean when they're off.

Push down and see if they rebound.

They come out, slowly.

Most of the time they wont rebound at all.

I was told to pull up on that black rubber spring looking thing and see if there is any oil in there..Said if there was there toast.

No oil... I can push them in with one hand on one end, and the other hand on the other end. Not effortlessly but not hard, either. ???
