So I had the stupidity to let a woman borrow my Neon for an hour or so and she left the E-Brake on while driving :cussing: . The rear drum brakes weren't new so the wheels did spin when she gave a lot of gas. She told me she didn't notice the E-Brake was up.

When she came back the rear drum brakes smelled like shit with some smoke coming out of the wheels and now the E-Brake don't work at all and neither does the rear brakes.

What will I need to get to make it new again?

Brake drums?
Brake boosters?
Brake pads?

All of those? x_x

Other than smell, do you hear grinding coming from the rear drums, when engaged?

Well from what I know about drums, and without seeing the damage first hand....

Brake shoes, probably for sure... again without seeing the shape there in it's hard to tell. But if the shoes wore down to the rivets and they did score the drums then for sure.

The brake drums could get turned if the scoring wasn't that deep. So maybe drums and maybe not.

And don't forget that they do have an adjustment for the tension.

But until you dive in and actually take off the parts to see the damage you won't know for sure. It'll be very obvious when you open her up to see the extent of what's needed to be replaced or resurfaced.

Sorry, but there's a lot of factors in play, but I do hope that this helps. And Good luck.

Well. I didn't notice any weird noise when engaged other than a damn hissing noise when I press on the brake pedal.

The exterior of the brake drums seems in pretty bad condition thanks to the winter here in Quebec so I'll probably end up changing them anyway.
I'll try to take it to the garage ASAP and it'll probably end up in me telling him to change the drums and shoes and try to adjust the E-Brake correctly. Hopefully he'll do it the same day. Drving without rear brakes with snow and ice is pretty dangerous.

Shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware kit, possibly drums if they can't be turned and if they got hot enough to boil the grease out of, wheel bearings.

um... She didn't wonder what the beeping from the dash was for? Or wonder why the brake light was lit on the cluster?

:withstupid: I was wondering the same thing. Our cars usually let you know when you are doing something stupid

don't forget a brake fluid flush. that kind of heat might have pushed the fluid beyond it's boiling point... like 300ish*? once brake fluid boils it's technically no good any more

Back from the garage, here's the list

2 Shoes
2 Drums
2 set of brake springs
1 brake cylinder
1 bearing
Maybe the brake fluid hose

And to top it all, the front left strut bearing is finished, but that wasn't because of the e-brake incident.

I'm looking at a 600-650$ job with the labor and the strut bearing.

Man, does that ever suck. Sorry too hear of the bad news. I was truly hoping for the best, but now I know that didn't happen. :(

Is the young lady going to help out with the $$$$$'s or what?
