Anyone got a write up for swapping out old rotors for new

Post by Fresh02 » Fri May 30, 2008 7:32 pm

I did a search, came up with nothing, wondering if i missed it, but is there a quick write up about how to swap front rotors, or is it simple as unbolting your rims, undoing a couple bolts for the caliper and it comes off. Just wondering, never really worked on breaks/ rotors before. Also, i would be swapping my pads as well, do i need that special break compression tool, or even something to bleed my lines, like i said worked on everything else on my car but the breaks lol. Bare with me. But any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Also on a personal note. Is 20k miles good/bad for rotors to be warping, that seems kinda crappy I did notice people having mixed feelings regarding how many miles but damn that should be under warrenty. Too bad my cars over the 3 year old mark.

You almost have it down. The Caliper is held on by two bolts remove them and take a large screwdriver and pry between the pad and the rotor in the opening on the tpo. this forces the pisyon back into the caliper. get it as far as you can. The caliper will come off the rotor much easier. Once it is off remove the outer pad. Use a C-clamp and squeeze the piston in till it bottoms. Remove the inner pad. If there are speed nuts holding the rotor on just take a screwdriver and pry them out enough to cut them with some side cutters. The rotor should slide off. Install the new clean rotor. Install the new pads. Slide the caliper slides all the way back (towards the center of the car) to get the caliper to go back in place. Once the bolts line up, thread them in and tighten. Do one side at a time so you can reference the other side if needed.

For the rotors it is as simple as taking the wheels off and the caliper off.

The pads are spring loaded into place so you can pop them out fairly easily. You will probably need a C- clap to push the piston all the way back in so that you can slide the new pads over the new rotors.

Bleeding the brakes you'll need two people. One person to slowly pump the brake and build pressure and you to go from wheel to wheel releasing the pressure (its a little more complicated than that and any internet search will provide good information on how to do it). The proper order for Neons is Passenger rear, Driver Front, Driver Rear, Passenger Front (If I have this mixed up someone correct me, but I think this is right).

20k on rotors is very bad. If rotors are warping there could be other underlying issues that you are not aware of yet.

That is the short of it. There is a lot of info out there that will be more specific, but I don't have time to write all of it up.
