Tokico HP rear = owned. Help

Hate spring compressing
Image

So after the front torquing, all was good until i got to the rear struts and when I was tightening the rear damper shaft nut to 55 ft/lbs (per official service manual). Snap. Image

So I am sending the strut back but, is there something different with rears i should know about? I noticed that tokico sent different nuts on their rear struts than the front, they are lock types. Man i am so pissed. Tried the tokico hotline to check if their torque specs were the same as stock but no answer yet. Not to mention how i am gonna get the nut off now without scratching the damper shaft. :cussing:

That sucks. Dont' know what to tell ya.

Btw spring compressing is quick and easy with the proper tools. I can do a full set of springs and struts in about 2 hours with my tools. And that is with a beer break in there somewhere.

Wow, that sucks the big one. I hate to say that I just did this whole job two weeks ago without any problems. I was able to get the rear Tokico HP struts torqued to specs. I also noticed that the rear struts had different locking nuts but since they were bigger than the original ones (and I didn't have the right size deep socket for them) I just went ahead and reused the original ones from the old stock struts.

All I can tell you is once it's all said and done, and the dust settles from this bullshit....... You, my friend are going too love them.

Are you lowering your baby as well or just replacing the stock struts?

Hang in there, best of luck for a speedy resolution. ;)

Thanks man. Srt springs, not much of a drop but higher rates in the front, also putting in a rear progress sway. Can't wait.

Doesn't thumb up with middle finger mean you want to have sex? You want to have sex with your spring compressor??

Try a pneumatic impact wrench. Usually you can blast the nut off without holding on to any part of the strut by hitting it with short bursts.

You could use a rubber strap wrench to hold the shaft while you get the bolt off.

Happened to me once. I put on a set of rubber gardening gloves and grabbed the strut shaft by hand and it came off. Its easier with 2 people to do it this way but make sure you have a good grip on it and dont let it break your hand.

I always apply some Anti-Seize to the threads before assembly.... That might throw off your torque values, however.

Are the Tokicos supposed to be torqued to the same spec as factory?
That could be one factor there...

:D . Luckily I had an adapter for that drillbit and sped things up with those, but still. Yeah I called up Modern again about warranty even though their site says to refer to original manufacturer on warranty claims and they said i would be ok if i damaged the shaft to take the nut off, and i could send it back to them so that was good news. I just put a vice grip on and got it off.

The guy at modern said the torque specs are teh same.
What kind of torque wrench? Was that a joke because i broke it or what? Ok so the right way to torque these without impact wrench is to use a crows foot on a torque wrench to tighten the nut with the spark plug socket while holding the top 10 mill correct?

Here's a link to a topic I had earlier this month on torquing the damper shaft nut. Look for 03blackrt post half way down, who explains it best.

Hope this helps.

Looks like you were torquing the stud of the shaft and not the nut. Despite the theory there is a real world difference there, obviously you found out the hard way.
