Besides using a special tool/socket to remove a strut from the top hat, any other techniques to do that ? i swear i saw something about this, but cannot find it anymore....
This is for a mopar coilover ........
I need to dismantle these to send them for repair. the thing that worries me is that the shaft end is not even hex-shaped, how can i hold that in place and prevent it from rotating ?
thanks,

Edit: I found the how-to's on strut and spring removal here, my spark-plug socket will not fit the nut (it is bigger the stock size), also, what kind of socket do you use in the strut shaft as in the picture? nothing seems to grip....!!
I need some help on this guys....I was thinking an O2 socket for this...
i need to dis-assemble the front for the coilover rebuild
Edit: Damn imageshack, what are those questions under my pictures?...i Just noticed that,..sorry guys

Here's a thread link
http://forum.2gn.org/viewtopic.php?t=33801 to the thread I had going awhile ago. It shows the tool set up I used. But then again you said that your spark plug socket wont fit. I just so happened to have two spark plug sockets both the same size, but only one would go on the nut (snug at that). Lucky for me the one that fit over the nut had the top area for the wrench.
I Hope you can use some of the info. Good luck.

The best way is to use an impact on the nut. If you don't have one, swing buy a garage and ask if they can remove the nuts for you. It will take them 30 seconds to do both, and if the shop is cool, they shouldn't charge you.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Is the shaft end of the regular strut, similar of this one on the coilover?? .i read your post, that was very helpful! thanks

Last time I talked to a mechanic, they wanted to charge me $200 to remove a broken bolt, probably they will charge me just for talking to them, or parking infront of the store, or even driving down their street... this weekend, i took my new/used rims to a Firestone store to see if he could just spin them to see if they were visually straight before i buy them. He wanted to charge me $40 for that (complete balance) , and I told him that i have not bought them yet, what if they are not good? he said sorry, store policy!!! ....those are our local helpful mechanics in town !!!
but yes, i will look into this, it makes sense... thanks....

Check out a local gas station the has a shop. Many times they don't screw you on little stuff like the bigger chains do.

No. I'm sorry to say that the one on the stock and Tokico strut is a normal 10mm hex. I apologize as I did not notice that part in your original post....

so this is not doable with hand tools? nothing could hold the strut shaft in place?
thanks,

You could.....but shouldn't....use a rag around the shaft and vice grips. BUT...if you scar the shaft at all you'll break the seal and the cartridge will fail.

it's plenty do-able with hand tools. just that it's MUCH, MUCH easier with air tools. i could do a set of struts and springs on a neon in 20min.

The problem was the shape of the strut shaft, what kind of socket would you use on that ? i regular non-coilover strut is doable, yes i have seen that......
any idea what could be used for this?
