hey not sure if this is the right section but...


when i hit the brakes they make like a honing sound, sounds like a hollow metal sound of something. i just changed my front brakes and the rears look fine.

anyone have this problem...i was thinking maybe something to do with the e-brake?

where does the sound come from? Front, rear? Driver side? Passenger side? Both? If its the rears, could be your rear drums.

i dont have rear drums...R/T...

i sounds like the front tho.

Did you turn your rotors and all that jazz? Does your pedal vibrate at all when you brake? Did you use brake caliper grease on the back of the pads to reduce noise? Forgive the game of twenty quesitons.

But 60trim is working the right way towards the answer. It's hard to make a call like this without a lot of info since we weren't there to see the condition of everything.

thats true i guess...i just changed the pads and rotors...but i started before i did so...i guess its not brakes?

Did you check the front/rear wheel bearings for play? Maybe the rotors are shifting the hub assy enough to cause them to rub something during braking. Don't know if LCA bushings would move enough to cause a resonance during braking. Just trying to think of something that would change when going from accel./coast to braking. Also don't the rear rotors technically have drums in them for parking? Or do thy use a cam on the caliper piston? Guess I should have paid more attention when leafing through the FSM.

If these were band new rotors, did you scrub them off with a brillo pad to remove the packaging film? That in itself could possibly cause the wierd vibration. .

i need lca bushings all around, maybe thats it...

how do i check the wheel bearings for play...

Lift the wheel off the ground. Then shake it in and out top and bottom left and right. If there is play in the wheel on the hub then the bearings are shot.

how much is that to fix roughly?

well... the bearings cost me about $30 each and I had a press so I did the work myself. I don't know what shops charge for the job.

Just remember that the weight of the car is shifted to the front during braking. Anything that is loose or has play will also go towards the front. Everything people said above is a good place to start. A load on the wheel bearings, or bad LCA bushings, could cause the wheel/tire to move around and possible rub on something (fenderwell, strut perch, etc) or just plain make noise.

but it doesn't really feel bad...and like i stated it doesnt happen all the time, even under hard braking.

just sounds like a hollow echo or something.
