Rear Wheels

Post by latief » Wed Dec 03, 2008 9:49 am

I just noticed this...

if i raise the rear of my car and disengage the e-brake, then spin my wheels manually. the driver's side rear only spins very few times, and comes to a stop fast. the passenger side rear spins for a long time without any resistance......

so the question is, which is the normal one? and what could be wrong with the bad one (which-ever it is)?

thanks

I wouldn't be quick to say either are bad.

If the parking brake is adjusted correctly, they should drag slightly with the parking brake off. The question should be if the parking brake is slowing the wheel, or the bearing. Typically, the wheel bearing gets loose. If you noticed some popping or grabbing (and not from the parking brake shoes) then I would say you may have a bad wheel bearing.

there should always be a lil resistance from the brakes, the tires should eventually come to a stop. Does your E-brake work good??? I assume u have drums in the rear?? if so try adjusting them. The tire that comes to a complete stop fast maybe to tight and the other side could be too loose.

My e-brake sucks big time !!! but i have always avoided messing with the rear drums because they are so damn confusing and complicated......

so lets assume this is an e-brake issue, what should be the action plan now? could someone explain the adjustment procedure a bit? i know it probably has been covered before, but i never truly understood how that whole drum system works to start with...

thanks for the input guys!

pssst...! John... just delete or move his post and you will win

Both are right that there should just be a smidge of drag from the brakes. I had one question come to mind regarding this...

does the e-brake adjustment on drum brakes adjust the whole brake or is it just limited to the ebrake?

Sooo...tempting...must...not...use...powers..for...evil...

The parking brake on a drum set-up uses the main shoes for everything, just like the old school cars.

Spring #16 may have snapped and it is no longer adjusting the brake automatically on the passenger side. IIRC the adjusters work when you brake in reverse. (backing up) They may also adjust when the parking brake is set.

They only adjust when applying the brakes in reverse. Needless to say, it doesn't adjust very much at those times.
