It has been super cold here -30 with a -47 wind chill one day - the wife was driving home from work - hit a bump and kept driving - no biggie - she called me and said the rear end is real squirrely and acts like is it riding right on the snubbers. I had her park it in the garage. When I got home the RR wheel was buried up in the wheel well - the rear was very lopsided. I figured 1 of 3 things, spring broke, strut broke or the strut mount broke. Anyway I removed the RR strut and found the strut shaft was so badly rusted and corroded that it would stick down in the body of the strut and not let the rod return. I replaced both rears with Monroe Quik Struts - includes the mount, strut, spring and boots as an assy - just bolts in - quick easy - nice - 4 wheel alignment and it ride great - one thing I noticed is the lack of rear strut rattle. here this the link - great product -much better than blowing struts apart - http://www.monroe.com/catalog/ecatalog.asp

probably a siezed strut, i've had the same thing happen and it made my car almost undriveable. Also looked like i only had one rear corner lowered..

From a safety POV it prolly wouldn't be a bad idea. The front VS rear dampening bias is prolly really skewed!
Replace the front springs also, like the rear. Old worn springs will trash new struts in under 20,000 miles.
