Tension Struts for 8" Wide Wheel

Post by nikolasmor@msn.com » Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:45 pm

I've got 17x8" ASA AR1's on now and the rear Tension Struts have virtually NO clearance and sometimes rub the inner edge of my wheel. Is there an angled aftermarket piece or something to push these out a hair to get the clearance I need?

This is on a 2005 SXT.

Thanks
Nikolas

mopar performance ones for the srt might be but i'm not 100% sure. i know for a fact that you will have more room if you swap in srt rear knuckles. The mounting point for the tension strut is more inward. But honestly if it isn't that bad you could take a grinder and take a slight amount off where it rubs

I thought quikslvr determined that the srt knuckles were exactly the same as the other ones? I could be incorrect so don't quote me on that.

Would taking a rubber mallet to them and creating a slight bend comprise the structure integrity?

Also, I know the SRT and Mopar Tension Struts have the same bends/angle. I also know that the rear SRT knuckle gives more clearance. However, does anyone know is the base or SXT Tension Struts are angled the same as the SRT and Mopar?

Thanks
Nikolas

I remember reading this on the SRT forums somewhere....

the Mopar performance one has a bigger bend so to speak than a regular neon or srt. after a certain year though, all srt started coming with that bigger bend from the factory (i think 04)...

in general, mopar performance tension rod in the rear should give you more clearance.

am i %100 sure about this? no, but check SRT forums, and some posts over here in the suspension section, it has been covered before

good luck

You could do this but by increasing the bend in the strut it will shorten the over all length and essentially pull your rear wheels forward and in creating negative toe. More than likely this could be cured by getting an alignment but at that point you will prob have 80 bucks in an alignment and could have just gotten some SRT Tension struts or mopar ones for a little more money.. my .02

I have unlimited alightments from NTB so I have no problem going back after doing what I need to for clearance.

I wouldn't recommend bending any suspension components. Taking a tiny bit of material off would be alright, but that's not a great idea either. 8" wheels are total overkill on a Neon, that's your problem right there. Most 17's come in 7 or 7.5" widths, you should have went that route. I'd go with everyone else and get either SRT knuckles or the different tension struts (if they are indeed different).

You posted the same thing twice, when my reply had nothing to do with alignment...
