Is 3 inch drop too low?????

Post by DroopDaddy408 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 8:18 pm

I've always admired a slammed ride. Down here in way south Texas there are no canyons to be carved like when I lived in Cali. Not even small hills or any kind of fun roads. I would like to upgrade my suspension on my 02 sxt. I just want a fun car to drive. I dont want to dominate the 1/4mi. and like I said there are no twistys. But I do want as far as a decent ride can get me with a spring/strut combo. I did want coilovers but figure I dont need them. Anyway on youtube I found a with neon with a 3 inch drop and I liked the look. Dont know how to add link so just search. Is that to much of a drop? Not asking for cosmetic opinions, just safety/mechanical ones. Please help. Thanx guys.

you will not get a 3 inch drop on struts and springs. At least not without riding on bump stops, bottoming out all the time and ripping your shock towers apart. Get some coilovers and don't look back

well the lowest springs that are available are the eibach sportlines that i have and i am lowered 2 3/4 in the rear and around 2 1/4 in the front,i dont think it is low enough,i am like you and love a slammed car so you will be better of looking at a set of coilovers.if you are on a budget you can get a set of NEX non dampening hight adjustable coilovers for about the same price of a set of springs and struts.they will lower the car up to 4 inches, they have a very high spring rate so the will be rough but if you have good roads i think they will be worth looking, other than that there are many others that are very good like Megan, BC racing, tien and others.they all run for around 900 + but are worth it in the long run cause if you like low then you will regret going with springs vs coilovers like i do every day of the week.oh and there is a group buy on srt forums right now for the BC coilovers so you can pick em up for a pretty good deal

I like people who BUY a 10 sec car and then brag about it. Thats like hiring someone to bang your wife and then bragging about the kid

The video I saw on youtube(search "neon 3 inch drop" the dude had Sprint springs. I havent found them with a 3 inch drop. I just want the slammed look with good(not race spec or autox) quality. If I do get coilovers, are basic, not full, coilovers like skunk2 or groundcontrol ok? I dont need full coilovers since I wont be driving hard, just zipping in and out of traffic.

those are slip on coilover sleeves, they aren't much better than springs, because they will still leave you with no suspension travel. Real coilovers are height adjustable independent of the travel.

Pretty much what I was going to say... since handling isn't your main factor go for something like airride.

just bite the bullet & spend the extra cash.......you tend to spend more in the long run when you try to be cheap

I know first hand, trust me.......i drove my car for the longest on a 4" drop with stock struts

Just cut 2 coils off your stock springs. Will probably ride better than those shitty ebay sleeves too. As stated above, a 3" drop would put you about 1/2" away from the bumpstops. It will ride TERRIBLE and handle even worse. The guy in the youtube video probably has no idea what he's talking about. Who's ever even heard of "Sprint" springs? Fail.

FWIW, they do actually exist. My buddy has them on his Cavalier. Not sure what other makes they are available for but I don't think there is a Neon application.

Yeah, I've seen Sprint springs before, but I can't remember. Upon investigating though, they are made for the 2GN Neons:
