Steering Gear Assembly question

Ok, my son decided to do a little off roading in his R/T Sunday night, and ended up taking out a couple small trees, one of which ruined his LCA, steering knuckle, and driver's side tie rod (the threaded rod that sticks out of the steering gear/rack). Amoungst other things...

My question is: can that part of the assembly be replaced, or is the entire assembly scrap?
I know in the FSM it says any damage at all necessitates replacement of the entire assembly - I was thinking that it said that because of liability issues, ease of repair, etc. I also noticed that the rubber boot is removable - could that indicate that it can be repaired?

Anyone know? OD? Dante?

I hope I used the correct terminology in my description... :tardbang:

The rod coming out of the rack is the inner tie rod. While Chrysler doesn't sell the inner tie rods separate, you can buy them aftermarket.

As long as the rack body itself is OK and it isn't leaking you should be fine.

Thanks, Dante, that's good news! I knew one of you knowledgeable folk would get me an answer!

Now, next questions: how does one change that tie rod? dDo you have to remove the rack to do it?
Is there a how to for it here on 2gn?
