Changed front rotors, found a problem...

Post by 2001 ACR » Sat Nov 21, 2009 7:13 pm

So, after much ado, 3 hours of labor, and a broken 10 mm socket, my front rotors are replaced. Man were they warped... The back ones probably need to be replaced too, so I'll tackle those next weekend. Oh, and I also replaced my broken left taillight, and installed some new headlights, so overall a very productive day!

Now, as I was getting ready to put my wheel back on after installing the left front rotor, something caught my eye, a cut wire. On the left side of the engine bay, there's a blue wire that comes out and connects somewhere close to the brake system. What is it? I wonder if it has anything to with the "ABS" light that's been going off randomly as of late.

I know nothing about mechanics, and was barely able to handle replacing my own rotors with the help of a friend. Where should I go get the wire taken care of?

So, do I need to replace/fix it?

I asked about that in another thread. It's supposed to help dissipate static charge for the wheel bearings. Mine is gone on the left side too. No issues though. Should be one on each side. I'd reattach mine, but I don't know where it goes from the brake area?

Oh. wow. Normally I'd think cut wires are a bad thing. But seeing as multiple Neon owners have this "problem", I won't worry about it. Weird :tardbang:

They are just cheap wire. They snap off. One end attaches via a clip to the wheel well motor/trans mount bolt hole, and the other end to the strut, IIRC.

I just attached a new ring terminal to mine, and called it a day.

Good to know that my car isn't the only one with both of the ground wires still intact. Juan saw them on the car and said it was the only Neon he saw that still had them in place
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

It's a ground wire to discharge static electricity that builds in the wheel bearing/hub assembly. It was a known problem for older chryslers, but I've heard neons don't technically need it. Mine are still intact and I'm keeping it just in case.
