Actually... when I worked at Sears doing tires, I saw several idiot kids who needed tires on their "slammed Honduh" after the spring shifted and punctured their sidewall. I laughed and couldn't offer any warranty on the tire at all.
I would of laughed my ass off. Kids these days.
Lol, I'm talking specifically about the kid with the Golf or w/e that couldn't go over 40mph. It's ok Teej, I'm not one for hate on other cars...

Cutting springs put your car and yourself in danger! Things can happen like: Strut blows, car blows, and your teeth blow...

this is also completely off topic, but VW wheels are extremely heavy stock wheels. I remember reading somewhere that they are the heaviest... My car is slow enough with 15" wheels. I wouldn't even put them on my SRT-4 if I had one!

^^ yes, but not every one cares about speed, i know i dont, guess i am a ricer

Doesn't mean you're a ricer. Plenty of people with fast cars put heavy ass wheels and stereos and stuff in them and make them dogshit slow. Some people care about more than just going fast.

so i'm new the the lowering world also and have a question, a few people have said in here if you get stock 1gn springs that you will get an inch or so drop, is that true? and is it safe?

Posted: Sun Feb 28, 2010 5:20 pm
by NiteHawk
you can do it yes.....but i wouldnt recommend it...

my buddy's srt that he bought used was lowered on 1gn springs and he bottoms out and rubs the fenders a LOT when the car squats...

On the other side of that argument, I've had first gen springs on my car for 4 and a half years now. Almost 60K miles on them, and my struts are still fine.

So to truly answer your question, yes it will lower the car about an inch and a half, but it may or may not blow your springs or cause rubbing issues. Some people have problems, others don't...

As far as safe, yes, I see no reason to call it unsafe.

there is two things i see here, first you can put first gen OEM springs on with no problem, it will lower you and an inch and a half like sean said

second, what blackhawk is talking about is first gen LOWERING springs, those will cause you to be slammed and hit your bumpstops, just stay away from the 1st gen lowering springs and you will be fine

I say you throw caution to the wind and go without springs.

What I heard is that 1gn oem springs ride like crap... true?

Ride fine for me.

first off, that's nitehawk, not blackhawk...

second, no, i wasnt talking about 1gn LOWERING springs, i was talking about 1gn STOCK springs. MY buddy's SRT has 1gn STOCK springs and he's always bottoming out and rubbing/scraping....

Then your buddy needs to learn how to drive... 60K miles on mine almost and I don't rub or bottom out hardly ever.

Sure I have to avoid potholes, but DUH who doesn't?

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:20 am
by NiteHawk
he does know how to drive. it bottoms out and scrapes just driving down the road...there's parts of Turnpike 66 out here where there are quick sloped drops and vise versa...when your car goes over one of those drops, it smoothly squats really low.............

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:21 am
by TheRandom1
So that's an isolated road, and not "all the time" got it.

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:28 am
by NiteHawk
that was just one example....

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:32 am
by TheRandom1
And the other examples you have given over IM have nothing to do with the spring either… for example:

Fender contacting the wheel… you yourself admitted the owner before him put on the wrong wheels, and the backset is off.

Lack of turning ability at speed… read above

Etc… nobody is saying this is a “performance” option. It is strictly an appearance option that will keep the stock ride while providing a lower stance.

by NiteHawk
i never said he had the wrong wheels, i said it hits the TIRES, not the wheels

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:36 am
by TheRandom1
Same difference. If the fender is contacting the wheel, the wheel is sitting too far toward the edge of the fender, therefore any lowering spring will allow the fender to hit the tire. Therefore, wrong backspacing is the culprit, NOT springs.

Either way, the ride is not the same since the strut perches are different on SRT suspension than on regular Neon suspension. That's why his SRT rides like ass.

1st gen springs are a fairly common spring to use. It's also been said that the more miles on the springs, the lower the car will sit. That might be ACR springs though.

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 7:14 pm
by TheRandom1
The perches only matter as the SRT struts will make the car sit higher than the same car on regular Neon struts. About a half inch higher, IIRC.

by FAC3L3SS
Right. Although I'm sure to an extent that has something to do with it.

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 7:18 pm
by TheRandom1
Hm. I'd be more concerned about the valving in the SRT struts than the perch height, personally. But you may be right, it may have something to do with the overall ride.

Posted: Mon Mar 01, 2010 7:21 pm
by FAC3L3SS
True. The strut perch + their valving are probably causing it to be one funky ride.

by hansken_yo
your also forgetting that the tire/wheel combo sizes are different. SRTs are larger overall.

Srts also weigh more.
