On my way to Sonics with a couple of friends I was turning onto I-95 when I heard a pop in the back of my car. I immediately pulled over checked the tires to see if there was a flat. No flat, thinking I just ran over a pot hole or the car behind me got the flat, I continued my drive. As I was returning home from sonics I realized I have to press further down on the brakes then I normally would, to the point where it's nearly on the floor. I got home and checked it out, I realized it was the brake shoe I guess you can call it that broke off. I fixed that but I still have to press down on the brakes to the floor still. Is this normal until it adjusts itself? After I replaced them both I took it for a spin pressed the brakes, slammed on the brakes, pulled the emergency brake, (stationary) all around my block. Today it's still like before. Is this normal or is it the brakes itself?

this is not normal.
What kind of brakes? disc or drum?
how is your brake fluid? if it was low enough you may have sucked air into the system causing your soft pedal.

Brake pedal to the floor = bad. Check where you park your car for leaks on the ground.
Did the shoe fall of the rear (drums or discs if you have an r/t) wheels or the front (discs)? I wouldn't recommend driving any distance with questiomable brakes. If you have to, use the parking brake to assist (pull up but dont let go of the button) because it utilizes a cable and should still be working.

I think it's a disc, I'm not 100% sure. I have an SXT not a R/T. The brake problem is in the rear. As for the brake fluid I got to check that. I will try using the parking brake idea.

If you have an sxt the rears are drums. I had both rear drums take a shit on me, and my pedal began to feel the same. Is your parking brake light always on perchance?

That just indicates that brake fluid is low. I would still check it soon.

Pull the drums and check the rear brakes. Get out the haynes manual or the fsm and an axe and have at it.

Sounds like the lining separated from the shoes to me.

This happened to my car early last year. Cruising down 33 and boom clink clank clink. I also had to press the brakes almost to the floor at first, but afterwards it was fine again. My car was 9 years old when it happened, so maybe around there drums start to go.

check wheel cylinders, shoes ( I had the shoe come right off in the drum), check the lines for any leaks.
