"rumbling" at speed. How to diagnose?

I've been figuring out how to describe this as accurately as possible. Here goes;

I am noticing a noise accompanied by a tiny bit of vibration from the left front around 45mph. At first I thought it was a flat because thats what it sounded like. All tire pressures checked ok. I want to say the noise sounds like a grinding sound. How could I go about diagnosing this? Jack up the front and check for slop by holding the tire at the 3 and 9 oclock position and the 6 and 12 position?

Thanks

If it gets worse when turning to the right, and eases up when turning to the left, it is likely a hub bearing.

Just turning enough to do a fast lane change should be all it needs to make it better or worse.

If it stays constant, it could still be the bearing, or it could be the CV joint.
