not sure if its the same or not... but are you loosing fluids due to a leak?

First, check all the vacuum hoses that goes to the master cylinder. Some hoses my get loose after some time, and this might be the cause of it.

1st Gen Neon master cylinders, vs. 2nd Gen, are different.

They use different size thread fittings, so using a 1st gen master cylinder on a 2nd gen, or vice-versa, won't bolt up to the existing brake lines.

check your brake bleed bolts on each caliper first. unless you can see the leak from the master cylinder itself. You've likely got one bleed bolt leaking out your brake fluid, and allowing air into the lines, causing the spongy pedal. Check all four and see if any of them have any signs of leakage.

Damage to the vacuum lines or brake booster won't cause fluid loss or a spongy pedal. It would actually be the opposite. Loss of vac would cause a stiffer pedal.

Also check the fittings that attach the brake lines at each wheel to the frame. I've seen these leak before. The fluid has to be going somewhere, so find out before swapping any parts.

Take off each wheel and check things out thoroughly. The fluid is either leaking externally or somewhere where it isn't ending up on the street/ground. A leaking piston on a caliper or drum is another very common possibility.

It is possible to be a rear wheel cylinder, and collecting in the drum for a bit before it flows out. Check the rear tire's inner side for fluid. Might be slinging it off as you drive. The rear shoes might be soaked also.

You should be able to see something by now tho. If you can have a helper step on the pedal, while you look around/under the car, it might be easier to see where it is going. Just don't press the pedal with a drum off, or a caliper off the rotor, or you will push the piston out of the bore.

The brake fluid also feeds the hydraulic clutch so check that too. Although it is more likely that the rear wheel cylinders are leaking as occasional demons just mentioned. However, you can't really see them leaking sometimes unless you take the drum off.

Umm you are mistaken sir, although the hydrolic clutch uses brake fluid, the hydrolic clutch system has its own reservoir, not connected to the regular brake reservoir in any way. It is also not hooked up to the brake booster.

not that this applies anyway since he has atx but i just didnt want anyone else getting confused.
