I changed my front disc brakes the other day with new rotors and new pads. Everything bolted up fine and i spun the wheels and i didn't hear and grinding. But now when i drive to work and if i get on the freeway and get it up past 70 when i get to the street light at the end i have a weird oily, melting smell from my front brake area, now i don't exactly know what the problem is so any help would be great. I just thought i should post it on this place since it was the last thing i changed.

Did you clean the rotors before you installed them? But the smell is normal. Itll go away. It almost smells like burnt clutch right?

I wiped them down, but i didn't spray them with any solvent. Since i drive a auto, i couldn't tell you want burnt clutch smells like. Should i have just used brake cleaner on them to clean them before i installed them?

what you're smelling is just the protective oil on them...itll burn off and then you wont smell it again...........also the pads will smell for a short time too...so you're probably getting it from both pads and rotors...

As long as the brakes are working fine....

Just for future reference get a can of brake clean and spay them down before install. It is only about $2 at Wally World. I always spray them whether they look like they have oil/protective film or not. It is cheap insurance.
