Regular Neon and SRT struts. Ask me again, I dare you.

Have some questions about how to achive better handling and stopping power using different springs, upgrading to coilovers, questions on swaybars, bushings, different rotors, pads, ect... Having any steering problems or questions about steering racks, tie rods, tie rod ends, ect... ask these questions here.

Regular Neon and SRT struts. Ask me again, I dare you.

Post by Danteneon » Sat Jan 14, 2012 11:50 am

Jason posted this info back in 2008 and yet we still get hit with this question all the time. The post will show what is different, but I will tell you now that, yes, the assemblies are COMPLETELY INTERCHANGEABLE! No if's, and's, or but's about it.
Diablo0 wrote:Well, here's a little comparison in hopes that it'll answer and show a lot of why it's hard and almost not possible to run SRT wheels w/ SRT sized tires with regular Neon struts. I have an SRT wheel with the original 205/50/17 g-Force T/A tire which is also nearly bald down to the wear indicators. Keep that in mind since with a new tire the tread will be thicker which makes the tire just a little bit taller.

SRT Wheel / Bald SRT sized tire on Neon suspension setup - Notice the very small gap between the tire and lower spring perch. Now, get a new tire which has thicker tread and you're coming very close to, if not rubbing the spring perch.

Neon sized tire on Neon suspension - I'm using my snow tires since they were sitting right next to me, but either way it's sized correctly for the Neon so the speedo is correct. Notice the huge gap compared to the SRT sized tire:

I'm pretty sure that strut/knuckle setup that I'm using I took off the car as once piece and they were setup at 0deg camber. If you tried to run any negative camber that would put you even closer to the lower spring perch.

So you see, with SRT sized tires, you're coming damn near close to rubbing or you are rubbing if the tires have more tread.

Now, here is a comparison of front struts...

Left = Neon Front Strut
Right = SRT Front Strut

Image

Neon Measured from lower spring perch to welded bracket where it attaches to knuckle - 4-13/16"
Image

SRT Strut from lower spring perch to welded bracket where it attaches to knuckle - 5-1/4"
Image

A difference of of almost 1/2" where the lower spring perch on the SRT strut is about 1/2" higher on the strut compared to the regular Neon strut.

Ah yes. That is the hardest part indeed :(

I added this info to the FAQ as well, but nobody reads those either.

We need a program that all noobies, must read all stickies, etc and pass a quiz before they can post. Also if you haven't logged on in 6 months. :rofl:

so glad there wasn't a quiz when I joined :rofl:

It would be very useful but a lot of people would probably not join because of it..

What they should have to do is read a thread about searching and reading stickies before posting general questions

Yeah, I thought of that too. The crickets would be chirping around here.

well i have SRT wheels on my neon SXT model.. i used my grinder to take away some space off the thing that looks like a plate were my tires used to hit there.
im using 205/50-R17 on my SRT rims. I also used spacers. :thumbup:

now the only problem i have is that when i do a full turn, my driver side wheel hits the cold air intake filter. the right side of the filter is all smooth now hehehe. still works though and i think it wont fall either because i tightened up that clamp good :thumbup:

Non-SRT lowering springs would probably just make you stock SRT ride height. What you lost in height from the shorter non-SRT lowering spring you will lose (some/all) when you go with the SRT's higher spring perch. SRT4 struts were designed with shorter springs and higher perches.
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.

To answer your question, yes they will still work perfectly fine. However, you will not get as much of a drop from the springs as you do currently.

give it a try :D

A buddy has a lowered 2001 and used it with SRT-Rims and 205/40 17.
So seems to depend on how much your SXT is lowered and the size of the tires.
a neon - what else ?
