Struts with no bump stops. uh....not normal , right?

Post by lilnicko11 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 12:08 pm

I just remembered that when I had my lowering springs put into my 2002 ACR, the local shop told me that there were no bump stops in the struts. They stated this because I asked them to leave them in when installing the new springs. Come to find out they were non-existent. That is probably a bad thing right since they do help the car from bottoming out and from the struts taking a beating more than they already have too? Thanks for the input in advance guys.

your factory struts have bump stops... you would think that they could have used those?

What im saying is that when they swapped the struts there were no bump stops to begin with which i found odd. im not sure if it was something to do with them being the acr package or what.

ACRs had bump stops too. They looked just like regular Neon ones.

I got a set of bump stops from rock auto, but they don't fit my Tokiko struts. :(

If you are still on stock ACR struts your bump stops are internal. Seeing how the struts are inverted I don't know how good of an idea it would be to put them in. I'm sure they would not damage the strut but would get eaten up fairly fast.

Now if you put in regular struts yes you should put them in as well

The 2nd gen ACR struts have internal bump stops? For certain?

I swapped mine out so long ago I just may not remember. If so, sorry for the misinformation Nick.

Yes. As far as know they are internal. I have a set on my car and don't have external bump stops either.

The reason I think they can not put them is because of the design of the struts itself. You have the body and then you have the shaft. In a typical strut your shaft would come right out of the body and the bump stop would sit at the very top of the body.

However if you look at the ACR strut that is not the case. You have a body and a outer and inner shaft. The bump stop would have to be resting on the outer shaft or it would be useless. That would leave very little travel.

Makes sense. I really should have taken some pictures of them before I trashed them.

I probably could have explained it a little better. But here is a photo of mine when I painted them years back. If you look at the outer shaft notice how thick it is. No real room for the bump stop. This is why they put it in internally I guess. The inner shaft is not visible but I was explained that if you take them apart you will see them both. I’m not taking mine apart to experiment.

You explained it fine

For whatever reason, there are not many pictures of the 2nd gen ACR stuts out there.
