Coilovers: healthy balance between price and quality?

Post by Skitlz » Tue Feb 19, 2013 3:22 pm

Okay I hope this isn't a topic that's been beaten to death already.

Edit: I'm driving a 2005 SE

I'm looking for some coilovers that are a healthy balance of price and quality. Does anyone have good experiences on any brands? I was looking at Raceland, but someone on the FB page said he and another person have issues with them. I can go up to like $650.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Who had issues with the Racelands, and what were the problems? They ~3 people I've heard / seen with them were enjoying them very much.

I dunno about here, but I guess other forums have had bad reviews about Racelands. Not specifically the Neon community.

This is just what i've heard/gathered.
So I could just be making shit up. Who knows.

A guy on the 2gn Facebook page.
Anthony Quintana: Ride quality is great but I am experiencing some serious clunking noise with right turns. Not sure if the coils are binding or what. Going to adjust ride heights and check with Raceland if I can't find a fix.
He said another guy had the same issue, but yet another person had no problems. I dunno if he installed them wrong or what.

^ My KWs did that as well. They use stock top mounts, which require the steering bearing. Racelands come with new ones even, but a small measurement off will bind up the springs when you turn.

I never had that problem with my NEX coils. They basically were BC copys with better dampers and a better spring combo but, I will warn you the rear swaybar tabs are not designed for very spirited driving. I snapped the swaybar tabs on mine. You do need the stock top hats tho. SLAW still has my old NEX coils. so they def. last a long time. I put a good 50K on them myself.

I went through a similar debate. I was between Megan's and BCs though. Never really looked at racelands. I can speak to the quality of the BCs though. I love them and have had no issues. Fairly comfortable too

BC's seem to be the best "affordable" coilovers out there IMO. K Sports, Megan, NEX, and Raceland coilovers tend to be pretty low quality units in comparison.

It's funny to say that some off brand coils are BC copies with "better" parts, but then follow that with, "make sure to reuse your stock top hats and don't drive hard or you'll snap the swaybar brackets." Hilarious, actually. If you need to reuse stock strut components or drive carefully to avoid breaking the units... there's nothing better about them. Period.

Don't cheap out on suspension parts. You get what you pay for and a failure could potentially be a safety hazard.

honestly the ride quality was better with the NEX coils vs. BCs and they are road worthy just apparnetly not autox worthy with upgraded swaybars.

dug this up:

if you can only go up to like $650 then forget about BC, Megans,Mopar,D2, or any other high end coilover cause most cause upwards of $850 shipped and not to mention your going to want an alignment after installing them. so if you are on a budget then i would say get the racelands but then again i never did like the having to use the oem top hats but it seems like the racelands are going to be the one everyone gets now cause they are cheap. just my opinion. ive had Megans before and loved them, never had a problem with them.

two different people now on facebook both have issues with racelands and the design.....tires rub the springs when both had zero issues with struts before the install....and even my neighbor has acr srt struts with the lower spring perch and no issues till he put the racelands on. now has to run spacers so they dont rub

Kind of defeats one of the purposes to run coil overs doesn't it?
