Stiffer Rear Mounts/Clunking in Rear???? Solution!

Post by SlvrACR » Wed Jun 07, 2006 10:42 am

Well I had a clunking in the rear like alot of the 2nd gens. I tryed getting new mounts but that didnt help. I found that someone did a fix on SRTforums. THere was no how-to so I did a short one with some pics.

Your gonna need to buy:
1 Tube of 3m Windo-Weld Urethane (Found mine at Advanced Auto)
Whatever tools you dont have to take the strut apart

First thing is to get the strut assembly off the vehicle.
Once you have the full strut off, remove the upper strut mount.
It will look like this. ( Notice the gaps we are filling in )

Image
Image

Now you take the 3m Urethane and place it in the chalk gun. Cut the tip very small so you can get it totally filled.

Image

Now slowly start to fill the entire gap with as much urethane that will go in there WITHOUT spilling out of the gap. You want to wipe it clean so the strut and nut will still fit in there tightly.

Image
Image

You should let these dry for atleast 5-7 hours. I did a day because of rain. My mounts had 30,000 miles on them and after driving them afterwards I can say this was a very nice $15 mod and got rid of my banging in the rear. I had tryed new mounts before this and took them back because they did not solve my problem. I know I sort of rushed the how-to so if anyone needs help im more then happy to answer your problems.

dude, wicked crazy - btw, is the strut hard to take off? I assume it means loosing the spring too? (I mean remove it)

If you are doing a drop this is a quick ez thing to do. Yes you have to take the spring off unless you only want to fill the upper. I did both so the spring had to go. I took a ride and loved that evern without the trunk carpet in it was so much quieter

did you just go to an auto parts store to get the extra strut mounts that you bought? I might just get more through work and fill mine becaus eI dont want to take it all apart again later if it clunks.

How much did they run you?

I found them through the catalog at work for like $25 each, so Im going to order them and go ahead and have them for when my stuff gets installed. The last thing I want is to finally get my parts on and have an annoying sound all the time.

man, this sound has been driving me nuts, especially with my illuminas cranked up to 4 or 5 setting haha.

this is a good alternative to buying new pillowball mounts or something, if there are even any available. maybe a little off topic, but does anyone know if the mopar upper pillowball mounts (says in the catalog that they work with the kw mopar coilovers) work on stock struts by any chance?

p.s, you suck for having srt ACR wheels, haha. wish i could find some. best looking ACR i've seen thus far.

does anyone know an answer to my question?

that is, can the mopar pillowball mounts (made for the stage 3r coils i believe) work with other struts, aka my illuminas or other coilovers for that matter?

Nice cheap fix man! Of course, if I still had stock struts I would totally go that route. But alas...

Sorry I didn't see this question before. The KW mounts will not work with OE struts. The opening is too small or too tall I believe. As far as working with other brands? Not sure *edit, the instructions that come with the kit say they "are not intended to work factory struts or other manufacturers products"* .I have a set of MP mounts here for my car...I will take some pictures and give you some measurements tomorrow.

I have the pics taken...but I still haven't taken accurate measurements...I suck :beatstick:

Things have been...a little hectic. I will get them done and post them in the next couple days for sure though.

As a side note...the MP mounts are REALLY expensive...
$399.00 for the front, $419.00 for the rear. In case you didn't know.

Ok, I finally got my crap together with the measurements. Notice that the caliper in the pictures is set up for reference only, the measurements the tool shows won't be acurate. The correct measurements are listed below the pics.

Front Mount

Rear

Image

^^^The bearing ID is the same front and rear...18mm

Image

^^^The adapter OD is 17.94mm

Image

^^^The upper spring mount is 22mm ID (where the strut shaft comes through, threads would sit above this point)

I hope this helps. If you need other measurements, let me know

thanks man,

that will definitely help.

and yes, i realize they are pricey. however, my dad used to own a dealership, and i still get real good deals at the parts counter...not to mention i'm almost their only performance parts customer. haha

haven't had a chance to measure my struts. only thing is, if my illuminas are exactly to spec with stock struts (as far as the amount of threads sticking through the top of the mount), then that might be a problem. i know for a fact that the piston diameter in my illuminas is far larger than the stockers, but i think this height thing may be an issue upon further contemplation.

nevertheless, i'm going to measure them and check it out when i have my suspension apart next.
