Painting

Post by SolarYNeon » Sun Jun 25, 2006 10:51 pm

Okay, so I just got my srt-4 hood :) (woohoo!!)

But the problem is, I need mine in yellow, it's blue. Cant complain, I got it for a 100 bucks.

But now, I want it to be painted my color. I'm not sure how much this is going to cost, but I'd figured you guys would know, seeing as a lot of you have had things repainted :)

It's just the hood so I'm not expecting something too big. I honestly have never had to have anything auto related to be painted, and I just dont want to get ripped off.

How much would you think this would cost?

The bodyshop that I first went to w/ the hood i just sold quoted me $700... but that was to repair some problems on it... but the paint alone was going to cost aroudn $300-350...

Rattle can it with the Mopar spray paint! :-D That's what I'm going to do when I get my SRT front... If it turns out horrible, I'm only out maybe $50 and I'll take it to have it done professionally, but if you take your time and do correct prep-work and finishing work, it should come out alright.

Just a cheaper suggestion. :)

haha yeah see, I have NO painting experience what so ever, and i'm probably the least art inclined person in the world. I'd end up spraying my leg instead of the hood :(

But could I just spray over the different colored paint or would it bleed through?

Plus I want it shiny just like the rest of my car haha.

I really dont want to botch it, because this car is my baby

You'd definitely want to sand the hood down first... Down to bare metal. Clean it up REAL good, then I'd lay down like 2 or 3 coats of primer and then another 3 to 4 coats of paint... Then get some clearcoat and lay down like 4 coats of clear. Some other people will chime in (I'm sure, 'cuz I might be wrong) about how they'd do it... Trust me, I'm no expert painter, either. :)

The way we were going to do my friends truck is since the truck had good paint on it already we just sanded paint and ruffed it up and plan on using it as a primer, If the hood has good paint I dont think you have to go down to bare metal. But I'm no expert either

he's just saying u can use the sanded eblue paint as a primer, since it'll be rough enough to apply new paint to.

On the other hand, id estimate at least 200 bucks to paint the hood, depending on how good a job/deal u get. I know a guy who does my paint work for me, and its still expensive even with a good deal! then again, my paint is $70 for 8 oz, about twice the price of normal auto paint, due to the pearlescent/metallic in the paint.

Doing it yourself will NOT look as good unless youre an amazing painter or have lots of tools and some experience. If u want it to look good, have it done professionally.

Maybe u should see if anyone wants to trade, I hear theres a shitload of yellow srts around  eblue is pretty dang popular as well, so its worth a shot. then u dont spend any money at all. :)

i have no problem with anything you say except this....this is complete BS you have obivously never painted or did said fuck it and never thought about it.
sand all the clear off. if your unsure take it down to the metal if theres any imperfections take them on then(before you rattle can wetsand up till atleast 1.5k grit) rattle can primer at this (run cheese cloth on it before you primer and inbetween every stage) when your shooting it dont get too close and no too far which would be about 7-8 inches and make sure the "fan" of the spray is wide and not skinny and shoot it make sure its all pretty even do your a couple light coats let it dry then wet sand it lightly if theres any imperfections then after its dry go at it again a couple more times do it again then start the clear use the same method and then your done(your gonna have to do some wetsanding and buffing)

or you can roll on rustoulem lol

I say just pay to get it done professionally.

And if they screw it up somehow they should re-do it for free.

just sand it down and then take it to the paint shop.... then it should be about 100, since the'll just have to spray it.

get a DA sander and some 180 grit sand paper and go to town...u dont have to take it down to bare matel just get it really dull then take it to a shop...i wouldnt go any lower than 180 grit though because the scratches willl show through on the paint *two years of auto body experience*

bring it up and buy the supplies lol but that would be a waste in gas...its not hard to do...if you dont have access to a DA sander just use a block but whatever u do dont hold the paper with your hand to sand it cause u will leave deeper scratches in the hood.

You know... I was looking at this and going hmmm. it just might fricken work. I might just do this haha.

Now for instance, I buy this product,

http://www.turboneonstore.com/customer/ ... ductid=361

And just simply spray it over the blue paint, any ideas if the blue paint would fade/bleed through, and this would be a total waste of my money? :)

I was going to try it under the hood at first to see if it looks any good, and then just put a "clear coat" on the top of it. I hope that works :/

If you want it done right, dont go cheap when it comes to body work!
I had my SRT-D fascia repaired and painted profesionally and it costed me roughly $375!!!
But the fascia looks like new......
Dont skimp out when it comes to body work, its like skimping out when it comes to internal engine parts. Save $100 on EBAY pistons, or go with name brand pistons.....
Just my 2 cents

lol ya thats my quote but as long as your just sanding it nothing will fuck up just get 180 or 320 grit sandpaper and a block or a DA sander

yeaaaaaaaaaaah but being 17 = me being cheap :) hehe.

I dont need it repaired and for some unforsaken reason, every single body shop in orlando doesnt return my calls! I'm just ready to pound my head through a wall :/

Plus ive got a guy who wants to buy my old stock hood & sxt spoiler, but I just need my hood painted quick. Agh! Plus its my one year ann with my girl tomorrow, so I wont be able to make any calls without her hounding me! HELP ME GOD!

okay...this is my opinion.

If youw ant to save some money on prep that the shop would charge you....sand the hood down and primer it and sand again. They shouldnt charge you much...maybe $100-$150 if you do the prep work.

or just get some fun aircraft stripper and strip all the paint off  but that might be more money youd have to spend since you would have to seal it and all afterwards.

The reason the shops are not returning your calls is probably because most shops are going to want to see waht they are painting before they give you a price and tuen it ends up being more work and money than they expected, but they have to charge you what they quoted. Its thier way of covering their back.

Even though Ive been w/ the shop I use for almost 4 years, I still show them the part first. OB, you should feel lucky that your paint is only that much. Mine is much more, and it cant be matched. but thats where that aweosome sponsorship thing works out :)

dine= someone who dont know how to paint well simply isnt capable of doing it "right the first time". IMO a novice painter has a LOT to learn. And no matter what u do, rattle can will NOT look as good as the surrounding paint. it has to be sprayed with a gun by a professional to look perfect IMO.
