Trunk bounces with SRT wing on it

Post by clancaster23 » Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:21 pm

Since I have added the SRT spoiler to it, every time I hit a decent bump, my trunk bounces and you can hear it. I have pretty stiff springs and just about every bump I get, you hear the trunk bounce. I can push down on the trunk and you can feel the little gap and the cause of the bouncing. Is there any way to tighten the latch of the trunk or do I just have to deal with the noise?

Refresh my memory...does your trunk use the adjustable bumpers?

If not, you can adjust the latch to make it grab lower on it's travel. Be warned, it doesn't take much movement of the latch to go from easy closing to non closing.

Also, did you adjust your trunk springs? When adding the spoiler the higher setting will put more load on the trunk making it less bouncy, as well as making it open easier as well. I would do this first before messing with the latch.

That was my first analysis when I read the topic, and you confirmed it as the problem. So your choices now if you can't completely close your trunk, my only advice I can give you is to go to a local junkyard and get a one that is working, or deal with that annoying clunk...

When you say adjustable bumpers, do you mean the rubber pieces that are next to the tail lights on the bumper that have the screw in them?

I haven't touched the springs yet.

The electronic trunk latch from the dealership is over $140, just a FYI. Mine went out when I got rid of the SRT-4 spoiler and traded decklids.

Yeah, scratch the adjustable bumper question...that was the crack talking

Set your trunk springs to the next hole (be careful, they are tough) and you should be cured of the bouncy trunk. Should.

First check to see if the latch is loose. My trunk did the same thing and it ended up just being catch and latch loose.

Both catch and latch seem to be tight. Don't move at all when I try to move them. I went and switched spring holes so we will see if that cures the problem.

I did notice a wire going to the latch. Where does it lead to? I have had the car a year now and always found it weird that there's no button in the car itself to open the trunk and I always had to use the key. Am I missing it somewhere??

Well it should be the same for all neons. I couldn't find my button at first, but then I noticed it in the top left corner of my glove compartment, so it should be there.

It might just be the wire for the trunk light if you have one.

I may be wrong, but....... have you looked at the bump stops on the trunk lid itself? They can be turned clockwise and/or counter clockwise depending on the need. I thought I had a picture of what I'm talking about, but unfortunately I don't at the present time. If needed I'll take a quick shot of them and post if you'd like. I know when I first got my subs in the trunk I had to adjust them to eliminate some rattle. I hope this helps.

See the spot where a button "should" be. None there so it was removed or one was never put in.

I see what you are talking about with the rubber knobs. Along with turning those out a couple notches and adjusting the springs inside, it seems a lot stiffer now and I doubt I still get the noise from the weight. Thanks guys!

I just got back from lunch and took two quick pictures of what I was talking about.

They'll line up with the rubber stops on the bumper with the screw in the center, as was mentioned earlier. Maybe you could pick them up somewhere if your attempt isn't up to your standards.

Mine aren't the same shape as yours but in teh same spot. I turned them out a bit and it seems to shut better and it takes more pressure when it's closed to get it to move like it was before so it should fix the noise. I'll let you guys know next time I go for a ride somewhere. Thanks for the help.

Also, the wire I see in my latch, I see the same thing in your second pic. The little gold colored lead that goes in from behind it. I have the same thing but no button in my glove box. Odd.

Yes, I have NO button in my glove box either. My baby was was manufactured in May of 1999. It doesn't even have the wire harness for the trunk release in the glove compartment. A very nice young lady, SteelBlue sent me an extra trunk release button that she had. :D I located it right above where the hood release is. I am in the process of wiring the trunk release button to my RKE module for the FOB, that's located under the dash.

Here is a link were I got my question answered.

Let us know if the trunk is now stable for the wing......... I hope so.
