im about to buy a buper that is already primed. i was wondering if i could just paint it myself so i wouldnt have to spend a ton to get it done at a shop.

What Josh is trying to say is that he doesn't feel that your skill level will be adequate to produce a good job based on the questions you are asking.

To paint a bumper properly takes special products to assure the paint is flexible and stays adhered to the bumper. To be honest, $400.00 isn't that bad.

You will pay close to that price just for the tools involved in painting to do it yourself. Do you have a proper spray gun and air compressor already? These guys are being honest with you, it's not really a learn as you go kind of project.


If you look on youtube there are a few videos that show the steps involved. There are quite a few steps, especially with flexible plastic bumpers.

go have a shop paint it.it realy is the easest way to do it,i am by no means a expert painter but i do know a few things and my shop set up that i have right now that i use to paint nothing larger than a bumper,body kit ect is already well over the thousand dollar mark.and thats not even for my paint,thats just compressor,piping,water traps,oil seperator,valves,regulators,filters,two guns,mixing cups,resperators,and i could go on.add that to the price of paint.that can go as high as 100 a quart or more,high build primer,then the clear.not to mention if its a metallic,or purl.if it does just changing the angle that you spray can change the way the metallic will lay out and then not match the body color,there is just so much that if you only want to have a bumper painted then take it to a shop,if you want to learn how to paint and are dedicated do it yourself

i just got maaco to paint my bumper for $108 (tax included). they did a good job for what i paid for it.

Browse around you'll find a decent price. $400 for a bumper with no bodywork needed thats being painted one color is a bit steep. Should be more around $200-300. When I did my hood, front bumper, eyelids and rear diffuser (granted I had to buy two different colors and clears) my paint ALONE was around the $800 mark.

Painted mine myself and I have 0 experience. It's not even done yet and looks decent from the 10 foot mark. The dull hazy stuff is just orange peel I need to get to. The part that I have completed with wetsanding/polishing looks better than factory. Might just have to do the whole car to match now.

I think paint on my SRT-4 is only gonna be about 500 bucks, just the hood, front bumper, fender, and radiator support. He does top notch jobs on the cheap.

yea 200-300 bucks isnt bad at all. i dont mind that at all
